College is Hell

I started college a few weeks ago, and it has been the most nerve-wracking experience. It's really opened my eyes into how socially maladjusted I have become. Every time I am walking around campus, I feel like I am being laughed at, and of course this makes my trepidation that much worse.

Anyone else here have a similiar experience?

Same here, I just started college too. It hasn't hit me to hard yet, but I can tell the worst it yet to come. I mean I'm defiantly aware how completely inept I am in all things social, and after two weeks it's only a matter of time before something happens. I get so anxious before and during my psych class, 200 students with random and mandatory class participation that is audible.

I just started collage aswell. Its really strange to say the least, its a fairly big adjustment being trown in with a load of stranger and going to big lectures with 90+ people. It can be very overwelming.

I go to college and I deal with similar stuff. I don't like walking by a group of people. I will stand by myself and I don't go and sit in the "lounge" because I get nervous and stuff. I usually deal with by listening to my mp3 player and keeping my head down. Also, I am always like spaced out and thinking about stuff that everything and everyone around me don't even seem real. In class I just ignore everyone and try to concentrate on what the instructor is saying.

The only time I am comfortable are in my computer classes (networking major). In those classes I am with the same students and it is not really like a class, but more like just a bunch of nerds hanging out and talking about computers and video games and stuff.

Also, I go to a community college and the classes are quite small. So there really isn't that many students, at least not as many as a university.

Wow, that must be terrible, I couldn't imagine 200 people in a class! You'd think a psych instructor would be more perceptive about others' anxieties during class.

Sorry to hear that. For some weird reason I liked college way more than high school. I was more socially comfortable in college because high school had a lot more judgmental people (bullies) in it unlike college where people were much older and more mature and were more respectful towards one another. I guess you just have to think that it's not quite realistic that crowds of people are judging you in a negative way. I know it's easier said than done but I hope changing your thoughts would help a little.

Huh...I actually like huge lecture halls, it makes me feel more anonymous. Usually in smaller classes, there are group projects to do and the professors want to GET TO KNOW YOU. O_O

And I know how you feel about the socially maladjusted part. Seeing people eating and hanging out together is always a reminder of how I've "fallen behind." I feel like a whole different specie now because if someone so much as asks me for directions, I just freak out as if humans are terrifying creatures. Pretty funny when I picture it....

College had to be the worse thing that happened to me. It was terrible because of the simple fact that there were were huge amounts of people all over campus. At least with work, the company's alot smaller, definitely not as big as a campus. Also, based on experience, I do find social interactions in school alot harder than the work place, just too many things going on.

1st yr of college was hell for me: i dormed thinking i would turn my life around but it was brutal to live among ppl my age who have a good time/have a life...

since then, ive commuted and college has been alot more relaxing, no social obligations

Enjoy it while it lasts. My senior year was a lot better then I expected actually, Remember this, take risks because you will probably never see 99% of the people you go to school with ever again.

Wow, you guys are really putting college in a bad light here, lol.

I'm in my 3rd year in college, and it's way better experience than high school. The people are at least a little more mature, there's a newfound independence that only you can decide what to do with, and the ambiance is much more constructive.

The classes may be huge, especially where I go, but for me, that provides a level of anonymity. Stress and anxiety are going to follow us around wherever we go, but college has been a good place for me to learn my boundaries and to see how far I can go.

Thats how I feel about it too. Yeah there's still some anxieties but it's not nearly as bad as highschool was. In highschool I had to worry about getting my butt kicked in the hallways or on the school bus. People would harrass me in class or walk up and slap me in the head and the teacher would just be like "You guys quit horseplaying" and did nothing. I dunno about other Universities but the people at mine are at least a little more mature and focused on getting their education so they can be something.

The more I hear about US high schools, the more horrendous they sound. Are there any schools over there where kids just go, take classes, learn stuff and pass exams, or is risking physical assault on a daily basis the norm?

My high School had no real fear of physical violence, at least not for being different. At least that's what I think was the case, I was very good at blending into the background so it wouldn't have been a problem for me anyway.
