College is Hell

The more I hear about US high schools, the more horrendous they sound. Are there any schools over there where kids just go, take classes, learn stuff and pass exams, or is risking physical assault on a daily basis the norm?

Yeah it depends heavily on the school and the area. I went to school with a lot of guys that lived in my neighborhood so it wasn't uncommon for the feuds started there to follow you onto the bus or class the next day. Plus a lot of people I lived with had a lot of unresolved anger issues, so if you were in a fight and you started to lose, it was no surprise if others watching jumped in to beat you down just for the simple opportunity to wail on some poor fella lol. They're losers though.

I can relate to that...and hell, I'm in 4th year.

The thing that stings me the most is when I'm walking around campus and I come across some of the hangout spots, where you'd see friends sitting down, chatting and laughing, couples having coffee, etc..

Everything I see feels like something I've missed out on.

I went to university a few years back and the classes itself weren't all that bad, they were 200 to 400 people in the classes (especially when informatics had a shared course with math and physics students). While you could see groups of people forming and knowing each other I was usually sitting alone and paying attention to the class.

There were a few people that sometimes talked to me and I could chat with them about class but not really about anything else but I didn't really feel comfortable around them either. The most annoying thing about university is how the people expect you to go drinking or to go to parties all the time, I don't drink and I absolutely hate parties where other people do, so I always declined to go with them if they asked. After a while they didn't ask me anymore so it wasn't really all that bad.

probably not ostracized... there are far too many people doing their own thing for them to bother with that. It can, however, be hard to find good friends without a lot of trawling though social nets, which can be very tiresome.

I would love to be in college right now.

This will probably sound like some tired old-person cliche, but you might think a lot differently about how "bad" college is 25 years from now, after two marriages, two divorces, kids, mortgages, car payments, two careers, and a mountain of bills and responsibilities.

Enjoy your life now while you still have one.

Join some clubs geared toward things that you're interested in... you'll be bound to make friends that way.

By joining the Sierra Club, I made my first friends... and get to go on 8 hour hikes with them and such! Whatever you're interested in, join up with some people who think similarly ;)

most of the US is made up of small rural or suburban communities with little or no violence - in school or out

Easy prevention (for me): no marriage, no kids.

There's one group of people that will accept anybody else with that hobby into their life...no questions asked. That is...the group of people who watch TOKUSATSU. The tokusatsu fans I have spoken to online (chat) and in real life are few, but if you are a tokusatsu fan, and so are they...it's a friendship made...no questions asked.
