Been prescribed diazepam (Valium) - how effective is it?

Hi everyone,

Today my doctor prescribed me some diazepam (Valium) to use if I need to go into a busy social situation. She's prescribed 2mg tablets, and says I can take up to 3 at one time, so 6mg in total. Will this have much of an effect in social situations? I'm looking for people who have actually been prescribed it. How does it make you feel? Did it help you a lot?

Thanks,

Daniel

Docs are prescribing it for different stuff : ex alcohol addicts, bipolar, anxiety/panic disorder, etc. So , you'd better consult your doc.
I take often 1mg (half of 2mg,smallest pill) before sleeptime (I have bip+sp), but i dont ever take it for social situations

It is quite effective however, it is highly addictive and should only be used with great discretion.

Yeah, I'm only going to use them if I'm invited to a party and I have to go because it's a close friend or relative.

Do not drink alcohol while on diazepam . Party without alcohol?
If you have never tried benzo it is gonna presumably knock you off for a while.

Yeah, that's the only problem. On the packet, it does say "Avoid alcohol," but surely I could have one drink and be okay? The anti-depressants I take say "Avoid alcohol," but I still drink with them and I've never had an adverse reaction. But like you say, these are benzos, so I'm not sure.

I took 4mg about an hour ago as a test run. Feel a bit detached, and my limbs feel a bit heavy. Also feel a bit sleepy. Not sure whether I like the feeling or not. We'll see how it goes.

4mg didn't really do a lot. I did feel SLIGHTLY sedated but it wasn't as strong as I expected. Bit disappointed, really. Will try 6mg next time. I've heard some people say that you need at least 10mg for any significant effect, but that would be going against my doctor's orders. 6mg max!

yes, you can have a drink but you gonna feel more drowsy. As to taking anti-depressants and drinking at the same time (alcohol is depressant!) it does not make sense to me .

Took 6mg before a social gathering and felt quite drunk. I made sure I didn't take too much water with the pills - only a sip as opposed to a glass - to make it have a stronger effect and it worked really well. Felt more relaxed and was able to socialise better.

I've never taken diazepam, but I've taken other benzos, namely alprazolam and lorazepam. They do indeed help with social anxiety, or any type of anxiety really. They also work great as sleeping pills.

But I have to stress what others have said about using discretion. Regular diazepam use can produce tolerance and addiction, easily.

And both diazepam and alcohol have similar mechanisms of action (GABA receptor agonists) so taking the two in conjunction will have an additive effect. You could probably drink a little and still be OK, but to be safe I wouldn't.

I took 25 mg of diazepam in a single dose yesterday and I managed to stand on my feet easily  If I was extremely stressed I would probably need some horse tranquilizer...

Valium is a very addictive anti-anxiety agent, and if your not careful and rely too much on the drug, you could be asking for trouble with an addiction. Also, anything over 1mg is probably too much for one person no matter size or weight, so I would recommend you go easy on it. Any drug this strong is going to have even stronger side effects.

I take it as and when I need it, usually a single 2mg tablet now, although when I had SA really badly I would have to take 10mg just to go to an appointment with my psychologist.

I think for me, now, it's more of a placebo effect than anything.

Man, I love valium. Just a pleasant numbing of everything on an as-needed basis, with no side-effects or withdrawals. Much better than any of the daily garbage I was on.
