All grocery stores think that I'm a thief

I'm afraid to go back into stores with things I bought from them, especially clothes. It's never happened to me but I have this nightmarish scenario of being accused of stealing the item and, since I no longer have a receipt, being unable to prove otherwise. I've read stories of this happening to people.

If you pay with a card, you should have an electronic trail in your bank back to your purchase. Just have that ready with you--on your phone--when you go into the store.

Better yet, have electronic receipts sent to your email so you can pull them up on your phone whenever you need to.

Thanks Miserum. Good advice! Also, with all the cameras stores have nowadays, it would probably be easy to prove I walked in with the article if it came down to it. It's just thinking of the scenario and the people who would probably be watching if I were confronted that way that I can't stand. It's a silly thing, I know but I'll have to try to get past it.

One other thing I thought of in case you can't use a card--why not take a photo with your phone of every receipt that you get from every purchase? If you lose the physical receipt, you'll have the photo backup.

I have tattoos so I often see security guards looking at me here and there, but knowing I haven't done anything wrong, I just do whatever I'm there to do and quickly stop giving a shit about it. In the grand scheme of things, it's so small.

My suggestion would be for you not to let your anxiety dictate the way you feel when you're out and about doing your thing. Let them be suspicious if they want, it's not your problem. Beat them with kindness.

Well it's not really a way of beating them, it's more of an "I don't care that you're staring" little smile at the security guards and whatnot. You're entitled to that, since you haven't done anything.

I also think that sometimes they're just so bored that eventually they'll lock eyes with someone and not even notice how much they're looking at that person, regardless of their appearance or how suspicious they look.
