I'm very sorry about your experience, as well for everyone who also got tricked.
In any case, I don't think whoever fell for him should feel bad. Forums like this can seem extremely friendly and safe and make us forget that basically anyone can join. This can cause some people to be overly naive when it comes to people they meet.
I think the lesson here is that words don't really mean much... specially over the web, anyone with an ounce of charisma can eventually charm and manipulate, while seeming totally honest.
What should actually make you trust someone are actions, so until you've actually meet someone and that person has proven him/herself to be trusth worthy, then he/she should be handled with a lot of care.

what you said reminds me of pitbulls. just because some of them attack (which is because their humans trained them that way and pitbulls are really wanting to please their owners kind of dog) doesn't mean the whole breed needs to get a bad reputation. it's the humans' fault. and just because some humans are terrible doesn't mean that all are.

^ exactly!!! a benefit of getting to know someone online is talking to them first, and later seeing what they look like (unless it's somewhere that they do show their pics first), rather than in real life where you see what they look like first.

I would say rather that it is an example of why you shouldn't be too hasty to trust people online. But I wouldn't say you should never trust them. You just have to have your wits about you. I have had plenty of online friends and acquaintances and I have only ever given personal information (or considered meeting IRL) to ones I have known for quite some time.
Of course, even then people can lie, but I highly doubt these people would keep up the charade that long (unless they're really that bad in the head, haha). As someone else said, people lie in the real world too. Just use common sense and trust your gut, online and in real life.
