what's so special about 2012?
I like how there are all these doomsdays, and then like when they come along and nothing happens, everyone just picks a new date.
Supposedly the Mayans could predict the end of the World, but confused the Conquistadors for Gods.
They didn't really. They had a shipwrecked Spaniard already living with them, who 'went native' and became an important man in one community. When the first group of conquistadors landed he organized a surprise attack and killed a bunch of them.
Didn't that one explorer get mistook for a Mayan God by that one ruler and showered him with gold and let the Spanish do whatever they wanted (I don't remember the names)?
That was Hernan Cortes you are talking about, I think. He told the Aztecs he was a god but they didn't really believe him, although they played along with it because they knew the Spaniards were powerful. They did think the guns and cannons were magical in some way. The Aztec leader Moctezuma was really stupid, he alternately tried to bribe the Spaniards with gold or attack them, and then acted like the attacks were all a big misunderstanding when they failed. He wound up getting held prisoner in his own palace and let the Spaniards run the city for fear of his life, until his own people revolted and killed him.
We're more likely to destroy ourselves before 2012
Me neither. The way things are going i wouldn't care if they said the world would end tomorrow.
