Re: Ions

An atom in its neutral state has the same number of protons and electrons. If it loses electrons, it is left with an excess of protons and becomes a positive ion. If it gains any electrons, it becomes a negative ion. When a metal bonds with a nonmetal, the metal will give its outer shell (outermost/valence) electrons to the nonmetal so that the metal becomes a positive ion and the nonmetal becomes a negative ion. The periodic table here shows the metalloids or semimetals in grey and everything to the right except for hydrogen is considered a metal. The nonmetals are to the left. Neon (Ne), Krypton (Kr), and Radon (Rn) are nonmetals and they will always be neutral. They are noble (inert) gases, meaning they already have a full outer shell of electrons and don't form bonds. (I think there are very rare cases where it is possible but I don't know the details. Not important here.) Zinc (Zn) is a metal and Antimony (Sb) is a semimetal. There is no mention of any bonds here and in their pure forms they will be neutral.

I don't need help with a particular subject at the moment, but I could really use some motivational advice to get me out of bed and to school. I'm missing too many classes and its starting to affect grades more than I would like. I've always been a good student in the past I just can't get myself into it for some reason. Anyone else deal with this? What did you do to overcome it?

So I'm going to be starting an Illustration course at uni soon.
I was wondering if anyone could help me with the brief we were given before it starts.

I have to bring in 3 items that I feel have been influential to me; these could relate to illustration, design, fine art, music, theatre, film etc. The item could be a book cover, a video, a drawing, souvenir, poem, record, even a bubble gum wrapper. Basically anything.
I can't think of anything to bring!!

Then I have to discuss about them for 10 mins, why I chose it etc..
I'm not really asking anyone to think of what to bring, more like if you had to bring items in, what would you bring? And what would you say?

I'm dreading having to talk for so long as I am not sure what influences me anyway, because I am constantly worried about what others' think of me even I can't help it so my drawings are definitely influenced by what others' think, I feel as though I'm not individual.

An illustration course, awesome. Uhh, if it was me I'd definitely take in a book cover; can you think of a book cover that inspires you? I suppose you could browse the books on Amazon and print a cover out if you don't own one with a nice cover. I like the covers of the Harry Potter books - why? Because (OOTP aside, correct me if I'm wrong) they all wonderfully capture a single moment of the narrative (and I'm referring to the UK editions :p). If I was going to talk about the cover of DH, I would mention how the cover tells so much without giving anything away - it includes Griphook and the sword of Gryffindor, but these elements are too subtle for most people to instantly realise what's happening. In other words, you can look at the cover for as long as you like, and only once you've read the chapter that it illustrates will you understand it fully. Some book covers are far more simple, but can still be inspiring - graphic novels tend to have nice covers.

It sounds like what you're looking for is simply three illustrations / designs that appeal to you - now when you go into a music store, a book store, any sort of store, the products with the nicest packaging will probably appeal to you more at first. Which packaging draws your attention? Why? If all of the items closest to you were on the shelf in a store, which one(s) would you be most likely to take a closer look at? You could take those things in if you wanted to.

I'll tell you the three things I'd take - the Keane: Under the Iron Sea album and artwork, which has a lovely theme to it all (I'd talk about that theme and how it inspires me - I like ongoing themes throughout a product or range of products), a Tarot card from the nicer box (great illustrations on the cards, and the other reason is that I could use a few minutes to explain how the illustration is relevant to the supposed meaning of the card), and finally, a comic book, for the cover in particular. I'm always impressed by the covers of comics and graphic novels, since that's the side of illustration that I'm interested in. Do you have a particular interest within illustration? That could be a starting point.

I bet there's at least one thing close to you right now that gives you ideas - maybe even a colour! I was inspired for an entire project recently by a single colour, #A4812A - that colour became the basis for the entire theme of the work. I suppose if nothing else, I could take in a piece of paper that colour, and it's just as relevant to the task as anything else.

Good luck with your course, by the way. :)

Thanks for the advice, that was quite helpful. It's definitely given me something to ponder. If anyone else has any ideas as well that'd be great. :)
