Question for Tech know hows/ gamers

I have a standard PS4 with 500 GB. Problem is I'm running out of space and had to get rid of some games so I could make space. I was wondering if you could use an external hard drive to store games. I know you can't store downloaded games but most of my games are disc. I would be ok if I could use my downloaded games on the 500 GB and then my disc games on the external hard drive.

Is it possible to do this?

Yes, you can. It needs to be one that uses USB (3.0 I think).

But you can also replace the internal one, so you might want to think about doing that and going with a 1TB or something (might be limited to 2TB). Apparently this doesn't void the warranty. Here's a guide I found How to Replace a PS4 Hard Drive - PlayStation 4 Wiki Guide - IGN

I know you can use 2 TB but the thing is I already have 300+ GB on the hard drive and if I go to internal I can't use my already saved data

Hmm I would like to think so, but Ive never tried it personally. I do this with my xbone (running disc games on both external and internal) but Ive not tried it with the PS4.

I hope it does work with external. I think I read that you may have to download something to put on the hard drive but that's it.

I'm not sure about the PS4, but i "rooted" my old PS2 & a bunch of PSPs (so that they could run homebrew software, as well as play copied ISO's stored on the SD card / hdd )
