Medication - when will mine work?

Ok guys, so I started on an SSRI just over three weeks ago. I know it says it takes about 4-6 weeks for it to have an effect, I just wanted to get some personal experiences.

How long did it take to start to work for anyone who's been on SSRIs or other antidepressants? And what exactly happens? Do you just stop feeling physically anxious in situations that you usually feel anxious in? I'm so curious about what's actually going to happen to me, and when it's going to start  And does it gradually start to improve, or are you suddenly just not anxious in a situation? I'm so confused as to how they work, lol ::p:

Its going to take 4-8 weeks to work, if it works at all. You have to realize that SSRI's have about a 30% chance to work.

No, SSRI is just the type of antidepressant that it is. I'm studying pharmacology so I could ramble on about it for an hour ::p: But the drugs are classed by how they work, these are Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, and there are other kinds of antidepressants like tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). I think that all the SSRI drugs would have pretty similiar actions, my drug is escitalopram, and the trade name is Lexapro. I think it's a pretty common one here in Ireland, my friend mentioned to me that her ex-boyfriend and her mum are both on it! I wish I had asked her more about it at the time but she probably wouldn't know anyways. I'm just kind of sitting around wondering whats guna happen lol!

i've been on celexa for about four months and haven't noticed any change. negative or positive. i guess a good idea would be to have someone else with you to monitor your moods because its tough to step outside of your brain to see exactly what's going on in there.

Well, I've done everything else, I've been in dedicated treatment for the last two years with slow progress, so I'm taking medication with my therapy to give me a boost I need. I'm not taking the medication to heal myself, it's to help as a part of my recovery process. I don't think someone can deem whether or not medication would be appropriate without knowing an individual's case.

Thanks guys! Yeah, I'm pretty much just doing what you guys have suggested, just getting on with my recovery and taking the medication, to see if anything happens! I'm on the lowest dose of lexapro aswell so who knows if anything will happen, but it's worth a try! I did get side effects from the medication the first few weeks, like nausea and increased anxiety, so maybe that is a good omen for it having a positive effect on me?! Maybe not! ::p:

I was on lexipro (10mg) for 4-5mths and it made a massive difference. Maybe it just gave me more confidence but I think it took the edge off, made anxiety more tolerable and I started to realised its just wasted energy worrying about other folk.
I was ment to go back to my doc is december but haven't really felt the need yet.
Good luck Karen, I'd say your doing just fine. Head seems to be in the right place :)
