Just rude people?

I seem to encounter a lot of rude/condescending people recently. Not sure why, but it's usually an encounter where I feel I haven't really done anything to deserve it, such as:

one time I was in CVS, and I went up to the counter and asked very politely “do you have egg coloring kits for sale?” I had called previously and they didn't have any in stock at the time, but when I went there, the cashier was apparently having a very bad day and retorted rudely “I don’t know, did you look?” and as I was walking back to I guess, find them myself, she followed me and gave me a nasty look like what I just asked was equal to "I like to eat babies in my sleep".

and after that, I was like “(sarcastically, but I am not sure if she noticed) Oh, thanks so much for your help.”

oh, sorry to bother you from your job to do your job, thanks for your attitude, this makes my anxiety much better, thanks much

I met some rude people. The question is how to react to these people. Should I treat them the way they treated me, "an eye for an eye a tooth for a tooth"? Or should I gloss over their rudeness and continue being civil? I usually go the civil route because I didn't want to start a fight.

Rude people are of course everywhere, but I am convinced there are larger concentrations of them in cities. I live in the city, and I encounter this constantly. Just the other day I was out doing some shopping with my sister and I remarked to her how rude many of the cashiers and sales associates seemed to be. It baffles me. Okay I get it, you hate your dead-end job, you hate that you had a kid at age 20, you hate that it's Monday... or whatever. But no one else did that to you... you did it to you (well, except for Monday, but you get my point). I won't even ask them to smile, especially since I know how annoying the customer service higher-ups can be with that. All I ask is you be courteous. That's all. Is that SO difficult?
