Hm...hard to tell without knowing her. She may have been excited when she answered you and not the other guy because you're amazing, or because she was on a high from just discovering her grade and then got over it by the time that other guy asked. About the eye contact thing, it sounds like she was just a little shy. Most people are when it comes to eye contact with people they don't talk to, much.

Your situation sounds like my psych class. I sit behind this guy who talks with his 3 friends. One day, he made a joke, I laughed, he heard me and we talked for a few minutes about whatever it was he made a joke about. Then about 1 or 2 weeks later, he just turned around and said "Those are some kickass boots!!!" I said "thanks!" he said "I have some that are similar but.....etc." and we started talking, and then he invited me to hang out with his friends at his gamer's club on campus. So maybe you can do a similar approach - compliment her and see where it goes, maybe pair your compliment with a question (Where did you get ______? How long have you been _______? Did you do it yourself?)

hm... well since you're handsome and she did the giddy smiley thing anyway, you can look at yourself as having the upper hand! when you said she looked down and away, that doesn't mean you did anything wrong or she's uninterested, she is most likely shy.. and guess who's causing her to be that way? you sir! haha.. it just depends what kind of person she is, ya know? i remember back in my sane days (oh when will they return? hehe) when i was in college and all, i was a little witty and known to flash a smirk at a guy and flirt away.. i remember the first day of lit class i was sitting next to a pretty cute guy and we shared 'the look' haha, and when the teacher was saying something about us probably not having our books yet i made some smart remark about him "obviously being prepared" --eyeing his huge backpack full of books-- (talk about showing some super false confidence, haha.. i guess i just like giving a guy the 'okay' to initiate something) anyway, me and that guy ended up having great times making out in the school elevators! good times!! HA! ..anyway, girls like to be asked those random questions, we like to know you could possibly be interested. and you being the one to open is definitely the right idea, maybe you should just smile and come up with any small talk.. something that would apply to class or homework or something like that, ya know? we'll think of something!! haha

The turtle comment sounds great. There was a guy on a show I watched called "The Pick-up Artist" who used "Hi, my name is Brian and I like pickle juice" as his opener and it worked like a charm. The show itself was kinda dumb but I remember Brian and his pickle line cause it was quirky and fun. Random is good.

If you compliment her, I'd say try to find something you're genuinely interested in about her, not something generic like "Nice hair" unless of course, you think her hair is extremely unique. If you can't find something to compliment her on right away (that could actually lead to more than just "thanks"), I think asking her something about the class or school in general works. I've had a few conversations started because one of us asked the other about homework, which led to a comment on how well the teacher does his/her job, which led to a conversation about the really weird teachers in the school and so on.

haha! that's great! see! you are good at this! the turtle thing is great.. anything totally off the wall like that is always a laugh, and real laugh is much better than 'awkward laugh', right?! and anyway, if you don't want to go that random in fear of a "...what?" haha, maybe someone will make it easy for you and give you something to crack a joke about.. it's always good to be able to almost tell what she's thinking... you know how if there's a total annoyance in class and you see someone looking at them with the same look you have on your face? you're probably thinking the same thing! haha..
and a compliment always works, the example harleyq used is a really good one.. saying something like "kickass boots" or "badass belt" sounds stronger, better and more manly than something like "your hair is really beautiful today" (however that is sweet, it's just a little awkward to say at first, ya know what i mean?) ..but like harley said, it's hard to really know what an appropriate thing to say would be without us knowing the girl.... like my bitchy comment that won over my buddy in lit class, i could tell he had that sense of humor and would want to 'one up' me when he got a chance.. i'd never say that to someone who looked to be lacking confidence or looked nervous or something! lol

I just thought of another one but it kinda takes guts to pull off, which is hard for us SAers:

"Yesterday my friend and I were playing 'Would You Rather?' and I got 'Out of *insert 3 old/crazy celebrities* who would you screw, marry, and kiss? If you were me, what would you have said?'"

EDIT: Of course, you can revise this to something more tame like instead of screw, marry, kiss you can do something like "Would you rather spend a week on a resort full of old, naked people or a week with a bunch of hyper-active kids?" or...something lol. I'm sure you have lots of interesting scenarios to use.

If you have a cell phone, you can sit near her and pretend you just got a text message from a friend who said that ^^^^ so it won't be completely and totally random. Just say "Can I ask you a question? My friend just sent me this text asking....." instead of "Yesterday my friends and I were playing....."

we are owning this thread!! haha! and dream on is a great one, but come onnnn 'love in an elevator' ain't so bad!

i agree, i was totally disgusted by those dickhead dweebs on 'the pickup artist' if that host guy came up to me and spit some of his 'magic pick up lines' you bet your ass i'd give him the look of death and motion for him to be on his way! what a weirdo! haha! however, the pickle thing does sound innocently humorous, which is in no way a sleezy move, ya know?

and that is bold, harley! did you totally pull that from the megan fox issue of cosmopolitan!? i saw that shit, too!!! :) haha, i so hope you saw it or i look like a dummie for saying it! but that was in that issue, about the three guys who would you screw, shun or marry or whatever...

anywho, endymion (what is your name? i really like calling people by their names, haha).. k yeah, anywho-- you're golden if you just flash a smile when she walks in, give it a minute and maybe turn around and say something about her, the class, homework, teacher, etc etc.. it should be easy for ya once you're there in the situation, you never know what could happen!

and the handsome comment totally stems from my e-crush on you! haha! i've so wanted to use that word for the longest time.. 'e-crush'! love it! :D

Megan Fox did something similar in Cosmo? Didn't see that one (don't feel dumb! You're just more in-the-know than me). I got the idea from Kathy Griffin, lol. I used it on a couple of people including my bf and it usually turns into a really fun game.

Yeah, The Pickup Artist was such a douchey show. Is it just me or were almost all those guys WAY hotter before the makeovers? If they were just themselves, I personally would've fallen for them but that whole "Hey behbeh I'm a stud!" crap was so lame...

definitely agree about the pickup artist thing! guys all dressed up more than myself is just odd?

and nah, it was just a page in the issue of cosmo with megan fox on the cover, i think it's the october issue... but they had a bunch of lists of three celebrity guys pictures and it said "out of these, who would you shun, shag or marry".. either way, that game = good times! haha :)

E-crush eh? ::eek::

I highly doubt I do something like that "Would You Rather?" thing.

Just keep those openers coming though!

That show looked staged. "No Actors" my ballsack. A true SAD is way weirder than those tools.

agreed.. and speaking of tools, that "tool academy" show on vh1 drives me nuts! if i ever (God knows how) ended up with a douche like that, the last thing i'd wanna do is give him another chance and drag him to the "tool academy" with 20 other tools!! man.. those guys are tools and those chicks are just sad!

can y'all tell i'm feeling especially 'chipper' tonight? haha.. i'm not sure why, i just like trying to put a smile on other peoples faces, especially when i can relate with what just about everyone is going through, ya know?

I can't watch Tool Academy. Those guys treat their gf's like crap and it makes me mad. Especially in the commercials where they show the gfs crying. I can't take that. Although I also think they're stupid for taking their guys to MTV/VH1, of all companies, to "fix" these idiots.

More openings..hm..maybe tell her you're thinking of seeing a movie and asking if there's one she'd recommend? Or saying you're thinking of putting some more music onto your ipod/computer and does she know any good bands? I don't know...I still think a funny comment, genuine compliment or school-related topics are the best/easiest openers for classmates you don't know too well.

agree again there! maybe somethings happened in your city all over the news or something on campus or somewhere most people would know about? like if the whole 'kanye west at the vma outbreak' thing had happned, you could have gone to class and been like "damn.. kanye west is a real ignorant ass, right?" haha.. little things like that, i guess?

im in a similar boat as u.. i commute to college and its hard to meet people especially girls for us shy guys. I noticed though in a few of my smaller classes, ther are some cute girls who i always exchange the shy glance with (we both lok at each other and when we notice other one is looking, we look away). But idk how to approach them especially in a class of little to no group work or talking. Everyday i sit alone and hope one of them sits by me >< maybe next time i need to sit by them

sure thing, bud! you should definitely take a seat next to a girl you're interested in.. just showing the tiniest bit of interest can open a lot of doors.. try it out and see what happens! :)

aww =/ wonder what was up with her today? haha, and i like 'shittastic adventure'!
sounds like she might have been having some issue today if she just kept her head down for the entire class period, haha.. or either she was being a bitch, heh.. ::(:

ah well, maybe next time? ..and what makes you think she's high maintenance? lol

Her fashion.

ay yi yi.. lol, that's usually a good indicator, but maybe you'll get to know her and find out different... orrr it could just be confirmed? either way, live and learn.. but, i will say, i'm into clothes, shoes, make up and all that girly shit but it doesn't really mean i'm high maintenance or spend a bunch of money.. i dress nice, but have a hard time spending a lot of money on ANYTHING, haha, i guess i'm a pretty big bargain shopper.. and anyway, yeah i may fix my hair and face and try to look cute, i probably seem pretty girly and all, but i'm more into sports than a lot of guys i know ::(: heh.. AND i'm a hypochondriac/agoraphobic/panic attack having weirdo! ..looks can be deceiving! haha, but you know that i'm sure :)
