Memory

How is your long term memory? When I talk to old friends they are always amazed about what I remember about them. I actually limit what I say to them about details I remember because I am afraid it will freak them out. They think it is a gift.

Of course though I remember every freaking mistake or bad choice I have made. I can also remember things from infancy.

New memories seem to be lacking though. I do not know if this is a age thing, I am 39, or the result of the benzo I have been taking everyday in the recent years.

Are other people here like this? Just wondering if this is a trait with people that have SA. How about your memory before you started taking meds and after? Is your memory better then the average person? I do not have one of those super memories though. You know, those people that can tell you exactly what they were doing at any time in there life.

I think the less you do in life the more your memory develops as there's nothing much else to focus on. I know a whole lot of stuff about people too including individuals and have plenty of memories from the past that others would have discarded by now. People wouldn't understand why I know so much about them but I also just get things more nobody knows this because I always keep it to myself.

I do a lot of rote memorization, so I have noted on occasion how my retention has increased over the years. But I also agree with Frank in certain respects, the lack of a social life means there is far less to remember and being on the outside looking in so to speak means you will notice more than were you in the fray. Not that I'm in any way saying your memory is not good, just mention another aspect of it all. If I met you in real life, I would expect you to be more the kind of person that has an inherent eye for detail, going on what you say.

That is crazy that you posted this....I am always remembering little details about people and what they said or did in the past....Every little detail. I don't know if it is a trait of people with SA or not though....I have a good me more with learning as well, like academic things....When I was in college I would study like half the amount of time as most people and get the same grades.

I noticed you say Benzos are messing with your memory....I know what that as like. I hope you are taking them like they are prescribed because the withdrawal from them is a bastard! I don't take benzos at all anymore and haven't for over a year but the thought of them scares me

Yeah I'm like that too. I think maybe since we don't have so many friends in our lives, we put more importance on the friends we do have than other people might put on theirs. So we pay more attention to things they say and do, whereas others might not care enough to commit it to memory.

My memory is pretty good, especially my long term memory. My youngest memory is from infancy too, only one though.

One thing people find kinda weird about me is how I memorize dates, including birthdays. Even though I didn't talk to over half of my grade in school, I knew every single one of their birthdays (and even birthdays of those in other grades I didn't even talk to). All I have to do is hear about it or see the date once, and it seems I remember it forever. I didn't like admitting it to people, since they would have such a shocked reaction. Yes, I have been accused of being a creeper before because of that. Another reason why I don't like to admit it.
Oh I know my family's birthdays too, including extended family on both of my parent's sides.

Back in school I used to get migraines almost every day. The classes that required a lot of note taking I would lay my head on the desk and cover my face to block out light. I had one teacher that thought I was sleeping. He would constantly try to humiliate me. It started out that he would just ask a question then call on me despite that fact my hand was not up. It made him pissed that I always answered him correctly. Sometimes I did not bother to raise my head to give him the answer. Then, since I did not take notes, he made extra hard tests that were open note tests. Eventually he got his kicks by sneaking up to me and pushing me off my desk. One time he did this and threw my back pack out the door. "Get the hell out of here...it is not fair everybody struggles in here and you do nothing and get A's" Haha, I wounder if he was a factor in my S.A.

As for the benzos, I take less than I am prescribed. Congratulations on getting off of them. I tried many times. Hope I can someday but now is not a good time to try.

Yeah I did that too. I also remembered anniversaries for coworkers because they would forget to get their spouses something.

What bugs me about dates is that there is one particular person that came into my life AT THE WORST POSSIBLE times. 23 years ago and just recently. Her birthday is on the same day my wife picked for us to get married on. I was always against that wedding date but I could not tell my wife why. Anyways I reconnected with her on Facebook recently and wished her a happy birthday. I am sure she did not realize that I knew that from years ago. She probably thinks that I got it off her info page. Anyways I ended up freaking her out about other stuff. So I do not see her chatting with me......ever.

Omg yeah I always remember everything about someone even if its from years ago. Even if its something small they said or wore or something. It honesly makes me feel weird and creepy that I remember so much about people. I also remember everyones names and birthday, even if I only hear it once I always remember it.
