You Must Be Able to Hit the Ground Running

Give me an interpretation for that

Give me an interpretation for that please ::p:

It means start as you mean to go on, start at full pace, don't take too much time to adjust, just get there, start working hard, as if you've been working there for a while

I think

I think it's about aeroplanes, no?

Like when wheels hit the ground they're not supposed to break, they're supposed to keep on running/turning and go on, not collapse...? And to steer the airplane where needed... So it can takeoff again and go to wonderful places?

So, even if you 'hit the ground' (if things go bad) to still keep running and 'functioning'...? To at least have 'maintenance mode' and keep functioning until next takeoff?

At least that's the way I see it? (I'm not a native speaker of English so others may have different ideas/interpretations... Have you tried googling it yet too?:))

Maybe it's for people who fly with parachutes too? (Not sure if they're supposed to be running when 'landing' too, I know they must run for takeoff...??)

Now that is a lot of insight!! Thanks!

Now I've got some fodder to use against recruiters and their buzzword world

My way of seeing it:
Recruiters who beckon IT professionals to get them excited about a role, but who never went to school or learned English, just playing video games at home all day... or watched too much TV, such as Teletubbies

Same buzzwords: FANTASTIC! NEW OPPORTUNITY! LEADING FINANCIAL ORGANISATION! AMAZING! Working HARD! Work Closely with...

Googled it.
Get off to a brisk and successful start.

hmm, I like my interpretation better :)

both may be true

in all cases, truth has many layers...

if you're new somewhere, you can't be expected to know it all immediately... it takes time to know the ropes... if they want perfection right away and you're not familiar with that biz, you can be better off with another company maybe?

I've heard that some want people to be specialized for exactly that post and software... Depends if they can find someone like that... (!)

People can have unrealistic expectations. I've seen job descriptions where they'd need 10 (or at least 3) people to do all that.

Of course they are hiring u because nobody else wants to do it lol.
But there has to be an overlap between their and your expectations and what you both wish... and what is realistic at all...

hm, I think with the way financial industry seems to be in crisis, not sure if it's really a 'best opportunity' anyway... You want some stable environment ideally, no?

Also I found some smaller/micro/mini companies easier to work with...

Can your IT skills work in non-financial-related fields too?

Feath

A boss has hi expectations for brief contractors on a salary approaching £96k. They expect you to fix all the problems in a few days, because nobody there has any idea what the problem or what to do about it. I'm often asked to train other people to do it. It undermines my skills, so I don't have to work there and won't be paid any more.

I get forced in on too high a rate, and would rather to do half the rate, and have longer to approach the problem, on a more reasonable budget for them, but I have no say on that.

I like your aeroplane metaphor. Never thought of that. It made me think long ago about someone thrusted into deep water, with little knowledge of the situation, asked to work some magic out of nowhere, getting worried about my legs snapping on landing, and needing some Harry Potter wand-waving to get my legs back to a good state.

The job advertisements are repeatedly full of this buzzword playground talk, and therefore I stay away and never go for these things.

If I did, I think I'd end up on the floor, crying, and smashing my fists into the tarmac in a rage, until every bone was broken and then I cut them off at the wrist; I might need someone else to do that for me, once the first was sliced off... I'd certainly be able to hit the ground, and I'd bet happy with that, without having to run, although I'd be better off with punchbags... or even better... recruiter's faces.
