Stimulants?!

I've read that after several unsuccessful attempts with antidepressant medications that doctors have prescribed stimulants, such as adderall or ritalin, to treat depression. I've also heard of it being used to combat amotivation and lack of interest caused by benzodiazepines. Depression usually goes hand in hand with anxiety disorders, and I was just wondering if anybody here has been prescribed stimulants as a "last resort" for helping their depression or to combat side effects of benzos.

Before you dismiss the possible benefits of these medications on anxiety disorders, just think about it. Why is the first line of treatment for patients like us sedation? I've read that it's perfectly safe to take stimulants along with benzos, so if you're thinking the upper/downer combo isn't good, I've already researched that. If we were given drugs that made us more talkative, happy, and focused, wouldn't that be more productive?

Haha I don't want you to think I'm a speed freak or anything, either, because I've just been reading up on all the alternatives out there, and this is one of them. Any experiences?

Stimulants have there ups and downs just like anything else...
Ritalin is some of the worst shit on the planet and will probably make u more depressed.
Dexamphetamine is a much better alternative as it gives u all the good qualities of a stimulant without the depression.
However, I find stimulants (which i used to take 4 ADHD) extremeley addictive or at least habit forming.
They work a little too well. But I must say I absoloutly love the shit... you can do anything on dex and all ur worries get chucked out the window.

Be careful with them though as if ur not you'll have teeth like mine.

methylphenidate is best thing in planet man. i snorted that short for months, then quit because i thought i would become addict lol. ritalin is only drug(not abusing it) that gave me motivation and become productive. i think im just an unmotivated person so it helped a ton! even with depression because it realeses dopamine.

Thanks for the replies guys I'm definitely gonna discuss this with my psychiatrist next time around. It seems like I've tried every antidepressant under the sun and I need a way to shake this depression that's secondary to my panic disorder. It seems like a nice boost out the door every morning might be the answer.

It's weird how these medications have the paradoxical effect on add/adhd patients who would seem to need no speed, but these medicines seem to do wonders in calming them down. Maybe I have a similar problem in my brain chemistry and this stuff will have the same effect on me by focusing my racing thoughts and allowing me to actually speak normally in social situations instead of having my mind go blank all the time. Anything is worth a shot at this point.

Sponglewang,
How would these medications fuck your teeth up? Did they lead you to getting hooked on meth or something? If so, sorry you got involved with that shit. I live in a county in Pennsylvania that was termed by Newsweek magazine as "meth valley," so I've definitely seen the type of tooth damage you're talkin about. I never tried the stuff though, or even seen it for that matter. Prolly cuz I "don't meth with meth."

I take adderall for adhd and it does seem to work for me but only on focusing, not really anything there for socializing. Although, when I did take too many stimulants it actually did make me feel a lot more comfortable around poeple and able to talk more, but it made me way too obsessive and I kept repeating things. But yes I do bet that for some people it would actually work.

Awesome hopefully my pdoc will allow me to find out if I'm one of those people it works for. Not a long term thing but just so I know what it's like to really get out there and have a real social life again... I don't know what the fuck happened. And no I started smoking pot because of this issue (which I'm not saying is the answer but it relives stress whether u people would like to agmit it or not)

I've noticed that if I take an over-the-counter diet pill my mood and my brain are better. I don't feel as down and my thinking seems more clear. But, I don't always even realize I am "down" until I've taken a diet pill and realize I'm not. I don't know... weird.

sorry silent type... I've been off the forums of late.

In answer to your question about my teeth: no they didnt get fucked up cos I became a meth head but I did become a dexy head and you get the whole kit and kiboodle so to speak of physical problems from any stimulant if u abuse it...

It fucks your teeth up cos it dries your mouth out and saliva is esseential to healthy teeth... you should have none of these problems if you take your meds properly

Acoording to my dentist you should brush twice a day. You may have a problem if when brushing your gums bleed. This is a indicator of bad decay. Resulting in loose teeth. Just what I have heard....

I'm twenty and I've brushed my teeth once a day my whole life. My teeth are perfectly fine. No cavities, no problems whatsoever, except for and impacted wisdom tooth but that's nature not something I did.

Then again, I have only used these ADD drugs recreationally on a few occasions. Maybe a dozen times tops. I really don't think those a very good medication for people like us to use, but its said to have been prescribed "when all else fails" by some doctors. Dumb shits.

In Australia medication used to treat ADD and ADHD are very restricted. Tightly controlled. Probably for the fact that when available too freely they are abused by many. I think the classification here is S8. Meaning you need to consult with a specialist before even being considered for a prescription. Although I have heard that some docs are now mixing ritalin with prozac. Just don't know where they practice. LOLLLL

i take 1mg klonopin in the am, and 1mg in the pm. i also take vyvanse 50 mg before work. helps greatly. i become outgoing, and focused. the bad part is that it only lasts 6 hours. so after that, im back to being depressed and unmotivated. the klonopin takes away my obsessive social thoughts, and the stim makes me more outgoing. i recommend benzo with stim. but, im still trying to tweak dosages, times, etc. right now im uncovered with insurance, but when the coverage starts, ill be good.

Methylphenidate / Ritalin experience

SILENTTYPE...

I have both ADD and SA. I am guessing my SA is due to years of ADD and having how "worthless" or "messed up" I am drilled into my head by my parents and teachers.
In October of 2007 I was put on Methylphenidate (generic Ritalin). When I was prescribed it, I thought to myself,
"OK Doc, I will take it for a few weeks and call you to tell you it did nothing for my focusing or for my social anxiety, but it did make my sexual life worse like every other medication I have been on since 1988".

Well, let me tell you, the next morning, I took the tablet and got into my car to got to work. I was shaking so bad I could barely drive. By the time I got halfway to work (about a 10 minute drive), I was feeling fine, the shaking was gone, the sweating stopped, and I was totally jamming out to a song on the radio. But best of all, I began to think to myself,

"Um, Dave, what the hell are you afraid of? Why is going into work such an issue? Big deal, let people say and think whatever they want about you."

When I actually go to work, I parked the car and walked right in the building. This walk from the car to the door is usually a very painful, very long process. Sometimes, I would get halfway to the door, turn around get back in the car and go home. But not that day. I not only walked in without any fear whatsoever, I was greeting everyone I saw. And if you knew me, saying Good Morning to people is not my thing AT ALL :!:
I went to work and not only busted out twice the amount of work I usually do, but it was so detailed and clean and crisp. (I am a merchant in a warehouse. Presentation is EVERYTHING)

In March of 2008 (last month) the focusing benefits of Methylphenidate were still in full effect. The removal of the SA and fear had dwindled to next to nothing. I am now back on short-term disability trying a new medication to take in addition to the Methylphenidate.

So yeah. I can see how the stimulant would work for some folks as a tension reducer in social situations. But for me, it lasted only 5 months.

Oh, and I am not sure what Sponglewang means by having teeth like his. But neither Ritalin or its generic Methylphenidate cause your teeth to rot. As you mentioned SilentType, Crystal Meth (the illegal version) causes that due to all of the nasty chemicals they use to make it.

I say give it a whirl. What can it hurt right? Of course it is addicting though, so please be careful. :)

Good luck to you SilentType.
