Sounding Dumb

Last night, I hung out with my friend who I haven't seen in a year. He's my best guy friend, and we have had that awkward trying to date phase. it didn't work out. I have a boyfriend now, but that's besides the point. As soon as I saw him, he asked, "So, what going on?" I just said, "Oh, not much."

The entire night went that way. He has no problem telling me about what he has been up to, but when he asks, "So, what have you been up to?" My mind went completely blank, and I replied once again, "Oh, not much." He kept giving me opportunities to talk, but I just couldn't think of a thing to say. What I did manage to say made me sound so dumb. I didn't mean to sound unintelligent, but my anxiety was through the roof. My mind seriously goes blank around him. I think it is because we are so close, and I worry about his opinion too much. It just seemed like the whole night was him talking and picking on me lol. Anyways, what do you guys do when your mind goes blank and you are hanging out with someone?

Yeah, you are right. I just think I am over analyzing the situations like I always do. I will take your advice and just keep asking him questions. It's sooo much easier that way. Thanks!

I have a masochistic strategy to cope my dumb-behaviour: I totally accept my dumb-role and just tease myself and invite also the others to do so.. I'm serious, it works..

Yeah sometimes my mind goes blank when asked that question too. I have to strain my brain to think of things that have occured in my life to talk about....they are there, I just forget about them temporarily for some odd reason...

Yeah, I have to strain my brain also. Sometimes nothing comes and I just say something completely stupid and embarrassing. I wish I could just have a normal conversation with someone again.

Easier said than done but instead of thinking that you sound unintelligent and dumb because you had nothing to say. Just say to yourself instead that he's the type of guy who would respect you with the awkward silence. You don't have to be the perfect conversationalist. Plus he's a nice guy he's not there to judge you negatively.
