So title says it all.. i am diagnosed with Social Anxiety last week. And i have read up some information about it...also that it's not curable. So it got me thinking, why should i bother continuening my treatment if it's not even curable ? I am feeling hopeless at the moment...whenever i get out of house i feel anxiety, and i if there isn't a cure for that...i can't see a reason to bother anything anymore. I have yet to try antidepressants...but i think i will.

Stuck with social anxiety for 60+ more years...woooo!

Social anxiety is treatable, in the sense that it can be reduced to the same levels that most others experience. Its not curable in the sense that you make it go away completely; you wouldn't want that otherwise people would act outside social norms. Treatment involves the therapy that works for you and maybe medication to assist.

There are times when I feel like I’ve hit the ceiling, and it is very frustrating. Sometimes I wonder if I’m that little puny guy, sitting on the bench, hoping against hope that I’ll someday take the field, while everyone around me knows that I’ll never be more than third string. Sometimes I wonder if I wouldn’t be better abandoning myself to my condition and making the best of being a recluse. I don’t know if hope is a good thing or not anymore, really. Sometimes I think it drags things out, and then other times I feel like it’s all I’ve got that keeps me optimistic.

you have misinterpereted what you have read. there is no cure because it does not need to be cured, everybody experiences anxiety and in some instances anxiety can be beneficial, what needs to be done is to change your thought patterns so that your anxiety isnt excessive and isnt interfering in day to day life. thats what cbt is about, understanding and changing your negative beliefs and looking at things more rationally.

So far i have been in therapy since january 2009. I have been in a 4day therapy group for a year. Been seeing a psychologist this whole year once a week...but i havn't tried CBT yet.

Maybe i should try CBT and see how it works.

So....with the right CBT/medicines you can reduce everything to a normal-person-anxiety level? That would be atleast something to look forward to. Now i just need to do CBT and get the right medicines.

Yeah, CBT is widely recognised as the best method to treat social axiety/phobia and to enable sufferers to live their lives normally without their negative beliefs etc. Medication is also used sometimes in conjuction if your therapist deems it neccessary, but CBT alone is very effective as long as you do the homework and stick to it. I've never fully commited to it, but I have bought a couple of self help books and am determined to stick to it this time, i'm using the self help method and not enlisting in the help of a therapist bcause the last one I seen did not really understand the condition, but therapist well trained in cbt techniques are becoming more and more common so there is plenty of help avaliable if you need it :)

Where did you read that terrible, misleading information!? It is well proven that anxiety disorders are in fact treatable. The only documented "cure" has been proven to be cognitive therapy.

How old are you? I wasn't sure if you meant you are 60 years old.

I hope you can find a sense of security in these forums, they really are a great place. Keep an open mind with anxiety. It most certainly is NOT permanent, and it definitely can be cured.

Good luck! :)
