really...can teachers do this??

i signed up for beginning guitar and everything was going great, i liked the class (even though i kept screwing up sometimes), we had to sing but i didnt mind it that much. we sung in groups and i liked being able to use my voice...i was starting to get used to using it more in school
and now before we even got progress reports i got kicked out and switched into a study hall. (i already had one though)

i know that my teacher switched me out himself because he told me that guidance called me down for a new schedule. i thought that was weird because they usually call people down over the loud speaker...
when i went there they said they didnt call me but they did have a new schedule for me. i asked why i was taken out and they said that the teacher of of the class must have spoke to my counselor and asked to take me out...

i spoke to her and she gave me a slip for him to sign to let me back in...
when i asked him to sign it he just gave me a sarcastic : "switch in?, shouldnt it be the opposite?"

he knew that i was overly shy too...i know its because of that that i got switched out.
hes always saying to our class that: if we 'cant handle' the class then we should just 'drop out'

im not giving up though. i need that class.
but i just want to know if this is a reason to drop someone....

Do you have any defined student rights? These are the some of the student rights were I work

* be treated fairly and with respect
* learn in an environment free of discrimination and harassment
* pursue your educational goals in a supportive and stimulating environment

This teacher wouldn't last long here. Consider making a complaint.

Wow. That's horrible. What a jerk.

As ^ Said, make a complaint.. Tell somebody. Or if you are able (which, well, seems a little bit irrelevant to say this on an SA forum) talk to the teacher. Tell him flat out what it seems like he's trying to do. Jerrk

Can you get a different teacher?

That sounds like an odd class.. Is it music school or something else?
Here, it's mostly 1:1 or max 2 or 3 students at once with one guitar teacher.. (?)
Except maybe on courses where you only learn the strumming and chords..
You can learn that by yourself too, with chords and lyrics..
Though it may be better to learn strumming with a teacher..

What kind of school is this? (secondary/high school or after-school classes, for-pay or is it free? If you or your parents are paying for it, you definitely have power to demand education you like.. if it's free, a bit more diplomacy may be useful, and yup, looking down the rights..)
It may also be useful to know if the teachers and school get paid per person or per hour.. (or both) or any other details.. (like are they putting together a performence at the end of the course or competition or something like that?)

I will tell you one thing. My Mum told my guitar teacher (when I was still a kid/teen) I had stage fright, sort of, and then I didn't have to play on stage anymore (which was a requirement otherwise). I was actually pretty mad about this.. (didn't have the nerves/guts to say anything about it though..) So this may all just be a huge misunderstanding between your counselor and guitar teacher too.. (?) ask your counselor about it?

Also, in an anime (Nodame Cantabile) a student had to demand pretty forcefully to be taught by a famous conductor, he had to show his dedication.. (?)

all kinds of people become teachers

including raving authoritarian jerks who like to push around young, innocent people

talk to your counselor or school administration to see if they're going too far

I agree about making a complaint...
Also, if you continue to have problems with the teacher, you could try self-teaching or seeing a private teacher - some aren't too expensive.
good luck!

I'd say, before making a complaint, see if there has been a MISUNDERSTANDING!! And what really happened?

Maybe the counselor said you were shy and one of them or they both agreed it would be best for you not to be in that class?
In that case, tell'em both it's a way of OVERCOMING shyness and SA and that you 'want' to work on this etc!!

Nice (but firm) words and clarifying what really happened can sometimes be more efficient than just 'making complaints'.. And you and/or your folks can still make complaints later if they don't respond to the good way...

Confront the teacher, as assertively as you can muster, and if he's still a jerk then make the complaint. Make sure you are as clear as possible, God knows complaints I made in my school days were misinterpreted and were dropped because they thought I said something I didn't and blah blah blah.

Worst comes to worst, they will ignore it (These days, though, I hear people aren't as a$$sole-y as they used to be)

Good luck :)
