Public speaking suggested on first appointment?!

Hey ppls! I just visited a psychotherapist that I was referred to by my doc. Ultimately his suggestion was for me to take up public speaking and also moclobemide as part of the treatment. I didn't question him, but I showed a lot of negative reactions to what he said. I don't really know what's gonna happen, but I'm going to inquire further explanations for his suggestion. To me it seems like the worst nightmare for so many people. I haven't even had my first job or volunteered, but this is wayyy past my comfort level. Has anyone else had this suggested to them before? Especially on their first visit?

Hi,

Yes...some good people with good intentions suggested me to face my fears all at once. But it doesn't work that way....it takes small steps in the right direction. When we fall down, we take rest and get up again.

Your docs advise is like climbing mount-everest without proper training or proper kit for me. One needs to make a beginning where they are a little comfortable. I think your thinking is absolutely right when you say 'its way out of my comfort level'.

But also, the solution does lie in facing our fears...at what pace and how? that's a good question. One has to work very intelligently, may be with some help from family. I used meditation as a tool to become calm and aware and slowly started doing social service where i interact a little with other people . Both made things simpler for me.

I was helped immensely by my meditation guides. Most of the suggestions i have written here were given by them. Not easy suffering, but there is a way to overcome it...i made some decent improvements in my social life thanks to them and my daily 2 hrs meditation.

You might already be knowing Medication is not a permanent solution . Here is an article that helped me understand why i am suffering http://www.dhamma.org/en/art.shtml:
