Please Help-Im going to go and make an appointment for the doctor tommorow

I just feel iam not mentally able to work and at the moment iam on job seekers allowence,i used to be on incapcity benefit but i got put off it as i didnt score "Enough Points"

I want to tell this to my doctor but he is as helpful as an ice cube in a sauna, im not sure how to word it to him that i should be on incapcity benefit and can he give me a sick line? how do i word this??

I told this to my mum who is 80 and my best friend and i love her dearly but there is a couple generation gaps between us to say the least, my mum has said things to me like-

"I get depressed often,i just have to get on with it"

"I dont think you want to work"

"I think it is the thought of working that makes you like this"

"you just have to get on with it"

I am sure anyone else on here can relate,i can have episodes at any times, who knows what or who can set them off??

Imagine ina job i have an episode or feel "funny" and leave the job or got sacked, imagine the vicious circle, unemployed -job-leave job due to mental episode then all the hassle with the job centre stoping my money etc and the y have litttle to no understanding and empathy towards people with mental problem in there.

Could any of you give me some advice??

Thanks.

This is a big question for many people with mental health problems, or those that are 'subclinical' (like I think you might be - not severe enough problems for the docs or job centers, yet you feel it might be too difficult to cope with..)

I think maybe you could explore what went wrong in previous jobs and try to look for work that is better than that and more reflects your true personality and way of working with things etc? Maybe some non-profit volunteer jobs could help to start with?
It might be good to write down episodes so far and see what the triggers were and try to see a pattern?

I read a few years ago in Germany there was a company where everyone has mental health problems, and accounting firm apparently. The owner/CEO said these guys really work themselves off when they can, and the company understands when they can't. They more than make up for it later on.
I wonder if that company still exists and how they're doing.. And if something like that could be set up in countries worldwide, perhaps even in a non-profit way.. (Lots of grant money out there..)

The current system isn't helpful for many people.. Some people on mental health disability in my country complain how they get 'barely enough' to scrape by and they fear they wouldn't get enough to survive if they had to live on their own, away from family members.. (They don't dare to work as not to lose those monies.. But they feel really bad about it, some would like to work and do something meaningful and feel more worthwhile about themselves) So, things to think about.. I think the current system needs changing..

Hope others will have wiser words!

It just frustrates me as i dont know how to word what do say to my doc,my mum suggested i ask to see the other doc in the surgery.

Im on 60 mg of ciatropram and it does bother me when my mum says that stuff as i think as i said quite a few generational gaps between us,im 34 and she is 81 next year.

I dont think from what i have heard anyway that many employers are sympathetic or understanding to folk with mental illness ie"Just get the job done"

*gay wrist* thanks babe! well my mum meant about me going to see this lady doc who is in the same surgery as my doc and id rather see her and my doc who is male imo has this"what you want me to do?" attitude and i asked my mum if she could come along with me to when i went t see him but the last time she came along with me and this is true when she tried to tell him what i was like he more or less told my mum to keep quiet and just wanted me to talk!!

hmm, maybe try to talk to the other doc then, if you can?
Also it helps me if I have questions or ideas written down..
my doc was sometimes unsympathetic too, then I printed stuff off Wikipedia (for hyperacusis, something unknown to her) and showed it to her and she ran me through some tests, I'm to have a test for celiac too - have you checked if you could have some signs of it? It can be atypical and cause depression and such too..

Now she listenes to me more, as she saw I got better after treatment I sought with a specialist (even though she said NOT to go to one!! grr!!) (for back health, a few years ago) and from info I found online and how I self-diagnosed some things right (the hyperacusis, basically someone on another forum told me I might have it).. When specialists confirm it, or suggest something, doctors get much more friendly!!

How many job-leaving episodes have you had, just a few or are we talking about dozens? In all jobs, or just several.. Or just one? Every job can be different.. Is there a place that helps people with mental health problems locally, they might give you pointers for local friendly employers or employment opportunities..? There are some non-profits for that where I live.. Haven't really contacted them much yet though, just for some info for someone else..

What is the money like, unemployment benefits vs for people on disability? Is there a big difference? (Or is it just the hassle having to go to job center and being nagged at? And yeah I can relate, I signed off and lived from savings and small temporary income for a while, not quite sure what to do now.. Yeah, got nagged at by parents a lot, for researching and doing things that were non-profit mostly..)

Have you had CBT (cognitive behavioural therapy) or such yet? Or just the meds? The meds alone are not enough!! I really hate it how doctors here mostly just prescribe meds too!!
So could you get CBT, and what would the waiting list be?

Yeah I'm not good with too much pressure either, usually just got ill and had to call in sick or such.. (stress-related and such)

If you google 'celiac depression' there's quite a lot of info online: eg Gluten and Depression - Gluten and Depression In Celiac Disease

It can also be about vitamin/mineral deficiencies.. For some people it may improve after changing nutrition or supplements.. (I had side effects from supplements though they made me feel better..) And I'm not sure if it's the same if paranoia or such is thrown in the mix, haven't really researched it much yet.. Most doctors don't know much about this so you need to research it on your own somewhat. Maybe track what you eat on fitday.com or such, and see if you lack any minerals..

Sorry to hear the CBT sucked, how long were you doing it and did you like the guy or was it 'not clicking' - that can hugely influence outcome too.. Have you tried a few therapists or just one? Some people need to 'shop around' to find a good one!

I can understand the " Ima man, full of pride, just get on with it" style and possibly self-treatment with alco or such, not necessarily the most helpful yeah..
Just saying that whether or not you apply for disability help, there are things you could do to improve your quality of life, or at least try... :)
Maybe you need to experiment a bit until you found something that could be really helpful..

Called to make an appointment with the lady doc today but got told she;s on holiday for a week so im to call on friday to make an appointment.phew at least i know i can see her, will she be able to have my medical history even tho i not saw her before??

Just tried one therapist and when i told them or was it my doctor? anyway that i WANTED to see a psychitrist they said i didnt need one!!!!! eh!!! i thought to myself"i should bloody know if i need one or not!!".

the therapist was a nice guy!. cant mind how long i done it for and the first seperate time i saw him he said" you say you like reading ,here is stuff to read about ocd" eh?!!! and the other time i saw him years later he gave me THE SAME READING MATERIAL!!!!! WTF!!!

Well i went to hand prescription lines for my mum and i at out doctors surgery, i asked the recpetionists the lady doc's name she told me and then when i explained my aituation why i wanted to see the female doc rather then my usual one she said "Does she know you?" i said "No" she then said "Well she would oly see your medical records, the other doc knows you" she did of course have a point so i made an appointment for this wed at 3.40m to see my (Sarcastc tone) understanding, sympathetic doctor...

Here is how i feel our conversation will go

Me-*I explaing to him why iam here and how im feeling"

Him_*No no, you are fit to work you dont have to go on incapcity benefit you are fit to work etc*

while i scream in my head at him!" I KNOW HOW I FEEL, IM MENTALLY NOT ABLE FOR THE WORKPLACE AND YOU WONT GIVE ME A SICK LINE, WHY DONT YOU LISTEN"

ARRRRGH.
