Music helps

hey guys, I know a lot of you have been saying how much music helps you. Most of the time if I'm feeling more anxiety than usual listening to calm or happy, upbeat songs help.

I used to listen to a lot of rock and hip hop, but try not to, because it may increase anxiety...so soothing songs help.

I even made this playlist on my iTunes i listen to that are all inspirational/calming songs. Here are a few of the songs and the lyrics...

Jesus Take the Wheel
Carrie Underwood

...she didnt even have time to cry,
She threw her hands up in the air...
Jesus take the wheel,
Take it from my hands cause I can't do this on my own.
I'm letting go, so give me one more chance.
Save me from this road im on, Jesus take the wheel.

If You want me to- Ginny Owens
The pathway is broken, and the signs are unclear
And I don’t know the reason why You brought me here
But just because You love me, the way that You do
I’m gonna walk through the valley if You want me to.

Cause I’m not who I was when I took my first step
And I’m clinging to the promise: You’re not through with me yet
So if all of these trials, bring me closer to You,
I will go through the fire if You want me to.

It may not be the way I would have chosen
When You lead me through a world that’s not my home.
But You never said, it would be easy
You only said I’d never go alone.

So when the whole world turns against me,
And I’m all by myself
And I can’t hear You answer my cries for help.
I’ll remember the suffering
Your love put You through
And I will go through the valley
If You want me to.

Also Ginny Owens- "This Road"

*** I know these songs won't insprire 'non-believers' but still look into them...and here are some other songs that help***

"On a High" - Duncan Sheik

and there are some who say there are so many things I need
so I run or I fight and I crawl or I scream and I bleed
I bleed, I bleed

well, it's a lie it's a lie - don't you believe it.
if you're fine then you're fine - it's all how you see it.
oh, there never will be no conspiracy of happiness.

I'm on a high I'm on a high
and there's nothing more to it
I have the sun, it's a star
why should I refuse it

oh, there never will be no conspiracy of happiness.

you're alive you're alive - how else could you hear me?
you are fine, you are fine - there's nothing worth fearing
'cause there never will be no conspiracy of happiness

* I freakin am in love with the FRAY...listen to all their songs, but especially this one

I never knew
I never knew that everything was falling through.
That everyone I knew was waiting on a queue,
To turn and run when all I needed was the truth.
But that's how its got to be.
It's coming down to nothing more than apathy.
I'd rather run the other way than stay and see
The smoke and who's still standing when it clears.

(Chorus)
Everyone knows I'm in
Over my head.
With eight seconds left in overtime,
She's on your mind.

Christina Aguilera (i know)- "Keep on singin my song"

I woke up this morning with a smile on my face.
Cause nobody's gonna bring me down today.
Been feeling like nothings been going my way lately
I decided right here right now, that my outlooks gonna change.

Thats why Im gonna, Say goodbye to all the tears Ive cried.
Everytime somebody hurts my pride. I see every blessing so clearly.
I thank God, for what Ive got from above.

I believe they can take anything away from me.
But they cant succeed in taking my inner peace from me.
They can say all they wanna say, about me.
But I'm gonna, Im gonna carry on, keep on, singin my song.

Everytime I try to be what they wanted from me, it never came naturally.
So i ended up in misery, was unable to see all the good around me.
I wasted so much energy on what they thought of me, simply just remember to breathe.
I'm humanly unable to please everyone at the same time, so now I find a peace of mind living one day at a time.

Your so right about music, im able to listen to sad and happy music without letting it affecting me however calm instrumental music like Sigur Ros or Bjork just before bed have stopped my nasty dreams from coming back, music and poetry is the most accessible art form in modern culture so hard to avoid it and why would you, although most commercial music or chart music is dull these days, the cheesy pop idol era is upon us so i avoid it at all costs, all the songs you mentioned are indeed calming, except im not a fan of Celine Dion but diversity is whats needed.

this is my top 10:

Bjork - Hyperballad
Sigur Ros - Aegatus Byrjun
Daft Punk - Aerodynamic
Joy Division - Atmosphere
Blur - Kids with Guns
Suede - So Young
Beck - Ramshackle
Can - Vitamin C
Sonic Youth - Hey Jonny
Jimi Hendrix - Fire

hmmm not exactly sure why that other post was deleted??

BUT anyways,

Most of the songs I chose just have lyrics that help me think positive. I dont necessarily think Celine dion is like the best singer or anything haha. Although her CD was my first purchased CD ever!

Anyway, I just wanted to say that even though it is easier to listen to like mellow and sometimes downer type songs, I wouldnt definitely reccomend listening to up beat things. Or at least things with positive lyrics. Youre already getting enough negative self talk on a day to day basis. Strech yourself a little more to listen to positive things for a change.....even if maybe you feel like gagging listening to it! I promise it will eventually help.

All I have to say is, SIGUR ROS. It's the most amazing music you'll ever hear. Plus Iceland rocks.

ps. Richey you have very good taste from what I can see.

Listening to up-beat music while I'm having a more depressive or more-sa-ic periode just feels weird for me.

I usually listen to music that amplifies the emotion I'm feeling. That way it intensifies and "burns out" faster, rather than just hanging on to me forever.... or maybe I'm wrong and doing what I'm doing isn't a good idea.

The music I listen to when I'm down is usually along the lines of: Opeth, Muse, The Mars Volta, Dream Theater(The Six Degress Of Inner Turbulence-album), Massive Attack, Slipknot(esp. their ballads).

When I'm angry it's mostly aggressive metal stuff like: Slipknot, Slayer, The Haunted, Lamb of God, Kreator, Chimaira.

I see someone mention Björk. She's a true artist. Amazing stuff. Her song "Play Dead", a very sad but very very touching song. I cried the first time I heard it, and do not cry often. Anyway, what's great about Björks music is that it's really dark stuff, but still optimistic. Perfect if you want something that fits(I feel alot of these happy-songs just lie to me...) and the same tine is optimistic. And yeah, Iceland DOES rock! I hope to visit that country some time.

And off course, I can always, not matter situation listen to System of a Down.

Oh, I don't know where I would be without music!

It brings such joy into my life. I think the trick is to find solitary pursuits that you love doing, and not worry too much if you don't have any friends, as you can be happy anyway. If friends come along, then all well and good, but don't get too down about it!

Same here. Music is always there, you can dream away with it, feel something else or just find something that describes how you are feeling(witch can't really be described with words.)

Music is amazing. It's like a drug I survive on when things are at worst, and when they're at best the music is just making everything even better.

Thats why im in love with my iPod!! I dont listen to it as much in public as I used to. But when my anxiety got bad and I still had to go on campus at my University, I would listen to it all the way, walking to classes, so it would give me something to focus on, instead of my anxious thoughts.

Hannahd I think thats such a good attitude to have! Be happy with yourself first. And when you are content, you will be happy, and youll be able to be youself. Then people won't help but love you and want to be friends. And yes you may get lonely till this happens, but find things, like hannah said, that make YOU happy. Chocolate makes me happy (in moderation), my fav. tv shows, music, jokes, whatever.....just find something! Good advice!

GEt an Iriver, they are colour and can hold jpegs, text files, you can record sounds with it, it has am/fm radio and the software upgrades update the features so it has alot more then a standard Ipod

I second what Richey said. I researched both and the iRiver is better just not well known and thus has no hype. I would have got one but they didn't sell them in the US at that time. But i got a decent deal on the one i have.

I agree with all you guys poste here :) . And now here is one of my favorite song.... i guess lyrics are quite positive.

Be Yourself
by Audioslave

Someone falls to pieces
Sleeping all alone
Someone kills the pain
Spinning in the silence
She finally drift away
Someone gets excited
In a chapel yard
Catches a bouquet
Another lays a dozen
White roses on a grave

And be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do

Someone finds salvation in everyone
Another only pain
Someone tries to hide themself
Down inside himself he prays
Someone swears their true love
Until the end of time
Another runs away
Seperate or united?
Healthy or insane?

And be yourself is all that you can do (all that you can do)
To be yourself is all that you can do (all that you can do)
To be yourself is all that you can do (all that you can do)
Be yourself is all that you can do

Even when you've paid enough
Been pulled apart
Or been held up
Every single memory of
The good or bad, faces of love
Don't lose any sleep tonight
I'm sure everything will end up alright
You may win or lose

But to be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do
To be yourself is all that you can do (all that you can do)
To be yourself is all that you can do (all that you can do)
To be yourself is all that you can
Be yourself is all that you can
Be yourself is all that you can do

i hope you will like this song ...

Music totally helps! I don't really feel the listening to up-beat music helps me. I just think music in general helps everything. When you are mad, sad, nervous, or happy.

........I love Nirvana. Grunge and hard rock music 8)

It's odd to me that some people feel better listening to happy or sad music...I have to listen to angry music... I can't stand happy music, and sad music sometimes just makes me sad. I find that for me, angry music(metal) either makes me feel better, or doesn't affect me either way...so basically that's almost all I listen to.
