Well theres no denying were destroying the planet. As for reverting back to basics, living off the land, hunting and gathering etc i love the idea. I really enjoy watching ray mears and bear grylls on tv and i think we can learn a lot from these kind of teachings but society as a whole is too far gone to change. Weve advanced too far and theres no going back. As much as you want to change things the vast majority of people dont and wont and in this age wanting a simple life is socially unnacceptable so i guess we just gotta deal with it.

I agree with you. It would be great if we could change, but we can't. The old way seems like it was better for the human psyche too. Seems like we would have more purpose if our work directly affected our survival. There are millions of people in industrialized societies that have meanlingless lives. They are like robots, always hungry for the next dollar to buy things to make them look better and entertain their bored and stressed out minds. Not everyone is like this, and probably very few on this board. But it has affected a lot of people and caused very negative attitudes. And we still have wars and crime.

Think of it, leaving in a city is a curse. We are inhaling those stupid fumes and eating processed food, and worrying about our job to keep the city going. This stupid legal law or tax coming in...this lawsuit and that nonsense.

Imagine this, you stucked on an unknown island. you farm for your own food, live the way you like. How much niccer is taht compared to the city life?

OMG if you are a total cheap ass and / or thrifty you should turn to foraging. More than likely there'ssomething in your area that you could gather if you wanted to.

I myself have been collecting mesquite pods when the trees produce them. I'm still quite new at this and much of what I'm doing now is a bit experimental. But I know I'm not nuts ! I know because my dad tells me that back in the old days they would make flour out of the mesquite pods that fell on the ranch. Recently they're being rediscovered as a health food.

Some resources online will tell you that the best way to use this kind of flour is by substituting half of a recipe with mesquite flour or something but I'm determined to find much more practical ways for usage of something so unconventional.

Right now the pods are ripening where I live so I take the opportunity to go out to the parks and gather what I can while the place is empty of park goers.

So far I have concluded that mesquite makes a sweet tasting drink mix. But like I said I'm new at this. Some say that you can make a kind of tofu out of it as well.

Acorns from the oak trees are a good candidate for foraging as well, but you must also keep in mind that they are poisonous and a bit complicated .. so that's another subject on its own.

So my answer to this post is, that if you like to worry about your health, and you also like the environment, maybe you should look for a local seminar where a professional naturalist can disseminate this kind of information specific to your region.

good advice norman. I think theres great satisfaction to be found in hunting or foraging for your own food. means nothings wasted and it costs you nothing.

In regards to this thread, the advancement of industry is destroying the environment but I believe the main problem that affects peoples mental state is the advancements in the media.

Between now and 1945 the number of cases of depresion has increased 10 fold. Granted depresion was not as well known or talked about back in 1945 but the number of cases of suicide has also increased drammatcally in recent years.
Also it seems the countries with the highest percentages of depresion cases and suicides are the more wealthier and more technologically advanced countries rather than the third world countries that we usually associate with having much more to deal with.

It seems that this increase has started round about the time that television and the radio has became more widespread. The media these days pumps out all sorts of reality tv shows or magazines depicting good looking people with tons of money leading super fast lives and theyre sending a message out to people that there is an ideal image and an ideal lifestyle that we should all aim towards other wise we are a loser, and
People are believing this bullshit and lashing out at the ones who dont follow this ideal. and it sucks!

If this life doesnt get any better for me then I can seriously see myself going off somewhere like in the film; into the wild.

I'm not so sure about going back to the hunter/gatherer society idea.. well. actually i think it's ok, but as long as we can still be civilized and peaceful.

I still think we should be civilized.

Im only against this current industrial civilization with it's overdependence on destructive forces to provide for their needs.

I totally agree with you. I have found myself miserable thinking that I don't have enough material things or good enough looks. Recently I stopped watching tv (due to the cable being shut off) and my attitudes have completely changed.
