"Don't cry"

How do people expect you to stop crying if you can't help it yourself. They say things like don't cry, but yet it wouldn't make a difference because it's already happening. Why would you try and make someone feel better by saying don't cry when that can't be possible and the victim knows it. I'd like to see just a pat on the back and a hug but telling someone not to cry is telling someone not to laugh at a joke.

And I know you people will say they are trying to make the one's feel better and that they don't want to see their loved ones hurt. But you know what, you telling someone not to cry when it can't be helped. I would accept asking what's wrong or is everything okay, but don't cry(even when something tragic happened to that person.) I would let that person cry as long as he/she wanted to.

I would say that is definitely bad advice. We learn through emotions. We become more human. There is nothing like a good sob to cleanse the soul. If you can no longer cry, than there's a problem. ::hug::

You're right it is a problem if youi can't cry. I have not been ale to cry in a long time, and it really sucks. I have no idea why I can't cry anymore either.

As for the original post. I think it is really for the other person's benefit when they say don't cry. They either don't know how to deal with you crying or don't want to deal with it, so they just say don't cry. I have a hard time patting someone on the back and giving them a hug, so I would say don't cry instead. I wish I wasn't that way but I am not good with affection.

I think most people who say this just feel bad for the person crying and don't know how to help, so they blurt out, "Awww don't cry". Unless you mean people who laugh at you for crying, or tell you to toughen up.

I think I cry too much. Depression, obviously, but still. Makes me feel so pathetic. I haven't as much as I did last year, though - I was much worse then.

Also, taking public transportation to and from work can suck when you have a bad day at work and as soon as you get out you burst into tears. Walking through the streets of a city, riding the train, with strangers staring at you as you try to hold it all together - NOT FUN.
