Does tv freak you out?

I hardly watch tv. When I do, I have to be picky about what I watch because some things will trigger my anxiety. My bf made me watch Bad Girls Club and it depressed me and seriously messed my night up. I can't watch reality shows, award shows or mtv cause I freak out. I don't listen to the radio either. I listen to my music online so I can control what I hear. Does anyone else have this problem?

Not at all.

Whenever I see things on a television, I can pretty much just write it off in my head as not being real.
Unfortunately, it works the same way with the news sometimes--- whenever I watch coverage on a global disaster somewhere, it doesn't seem real to me.

I suppose that is one of the reasons why today's society cares so little about eachother and their brothers and sisters all over the world--- because seeing them on TV makes them not real and thus; 'they don't really matter.'

They do matter of course, but... take it as you will.

I guess if things on TV freak out you, you could try thinking about TV in this manner... think of things on TV as not real. People are not real, places are not real, everything is just made up and shouldn't upset you.

(Then again... evoking an emotional response from the audience is part of what acting and art is all about.)

Is it so called 'reality' shows that freak you out or does that include scripted tv as well?

I have some sort of pathological aversion to award shows; I think I get second-hand embarrassment for people. And I loathe 'reality' shows, but I think it's because I find them to be a low point in our society.

I think you've hit it on the head, though. It's about controlling what you see/hear. We all feel the need to be in control, it just manifests itself in different ways for each individual.

Honestly reality shows are the worst. Especially the ones that glamourize ugliness. I know this sounds crazy but I think when I watch stuff like that it makes me lose faith in people and I get depressed. I don't watch the news either.

I hear ya. I just try and think that those people on those shows represent a small portion of society obsessed with fame, fortune, and looks at the expense of their self respect. (I don't have any idea what the actual percentages are of course.) National news isn't any better, as they seem to always focus on the negative with a few splashes of positive. I would imagine you certainly aren't alone in your feelings.

What is sad is my life revolves around television yet I don't even like it very much. The main reason why it irritates me is commercials. Commercials ruin television. The show gets to it most intense point then bam, loud annoying commercials. I need tivo but can't afford it. Netflix is a lifesaver. if i didn't have netflix i don't know what i'd do. Every day is battle for me to try to find stuff to do. I'm not one of those people that loves reading so I spend hours in front of the tv set. I'm a sports junkie too, I love watching basketball, football, and baseball. computer and video games bail me out too. Even if i had tivo, it still be annoying watching tv at times. Movies on tv are the worst, they love showing these edited B movies. Then you have to factor in that I've seen most movies that I'd want to see because I'm a movie lover, so if a good movie is on, it will be edited and I'll have already seen it. That's a bad combination.
