Does this ever happen to anybody else?

Whenever you're in public, do you ever feel uncomfortable with how you place your arms when you're standing up?

I mean, do you ever feel uncomfortable letting them hang?

Whenever I'm out, I feel really uncomfortable when I'm standing up (standing still, too), letting my arms hang (rest) by my side.

I have a habit where I always have to have my arms folded or in my pockets. It's aggravating.

Can anybody relate?

It's strange, isn't it?

I'm constantly grasping for a reason for it all.

When my arms are resting down, I feel that they're smudged in with my torso or something, y'know. I get a vibe that people are staring, wondering why I look so weird with my arms like that.

Sure, it's probably all in my head, but I don't understand it.

Yup - in my pockets or one hand holding the other arm behind my back when I'm nervous. This is mostly because I can't stand still. I always ahve to be doing something. But it's embarrassing.

Yes I do. I never never stop moving my arms, I move them probably ever 2 minutes or so to a different position. I don't feel comfortable just letting my arms hang down, so I always switch between them crossed, in my pockets, or having my hand touch my face. I usually like to have my arms crossed, but I think that doesn't make me look very approachable. So that's why I change it so much.

I have this problem, particularly in the elevator. When I let my arms hang, I feel like I'm stiffening up, and then people will look at me and think they're trapped in the elevator with some weirdo. Not that I really have to care what most of them think, but I work in the same building with these people and would prefer not to be known as "weird" in some way.

I could cross my arms, which feels OK, but that's bad body language since it's "defensive". If I have my hands in my pockets, which is what I usually end up doing, that sends a signal that I have "something to hide". Of course, the other people in the elevator, and in life in general, all have their own lives and probably don't care how I stand. But I worry about it, since supposedly something like 90% of communication is nonverbal.

I have been noticing sometimes that if I am in a long conversation with someone, we begin to adopt similar stances and arm positions. Whether it be crossing arms, hands on hips, arms in the air (joke).

But must admit there are some instances where, if I am talking to someone in an authoritarian position, I am just screwed - dont know where to look, where to put my arms or legs. AaAHHGHGRRR!

Hiya... Ithink ...

With you the reason is that you are concentrating on it too much and when you go out all you focus on is yourself with how you walk and stuff,,, When you constantly think about it that is when you start to feel wierd... Let your arms be where they are and dont worry about it it is all in your head and its self confidence no one else realises...

Its just you being over xoncerned over things that dont even come in to anyone elses mind

... Good luck ...

Same here! I feel as if i'm doing something wrong when my arms just hang. I always need something to hold and fiddle with, whether it be my bag strap or a water bottle....

One thing i recently noticed that I do is whenever I have my hair up, i take it down, fix it....put it back up....then like a minute later, I will take it down again and put it back up....and again....and again...

I am the fidgeting master :p ...i play with my hands all the time because it doesn't feel right if they hang. I also try to put them in my sweatshirt pockets if i am wearing one. I carry my binder when im in school so i have something to do with my hands. I tend to want to cross my arms a lot but then im always paranoid that i look mad at someone or i look unapproachable.

The main reason I carry a purse when I go out, is so I will have something to do with my hands. Having something to cling to eases a bit of my anxiety in public. Holding onto my purse is much less embarrassing than trying to carry around the old "security blanket" that I used as a small child.

Whenever I'm in public I have to have something to either hold on to or pockets to put my hands in. I can't walk around with my arms just hanging at my sides, it feels weird and I feel vulnerable in a way I guess. I also have to wear a hat when I'm out in public too, I feel to vulnerable and weird without it. One reason fall and winter are my favorite times of year is cause I can wear sweatshirts and put my hands in the pocket and put the hood up. I love that, it makes me feel all cozy and protected.
