psyciatrist - medical doctor and can prescribe medicine and administer therapy
psychology - specialist in abnormal psychology. provides therapy
counselor - specialist and works with everyday people with everyday coping problems (like stress, school, work, etc)

when you go the first time they have a test they have to give you to get the basics (to make sure you're sane and all that jazz) like memorization, what day it is, what your name is, what year it is, coordination, etc. it's easy and nothing to worry about.

then they ask you why you've come, you give them your story, they give some input. if you think you need meds, ask. they'll ask you why you have the thoughts you do, how you feel, etc. they're not there to interrigate you, it's not as bad or horrible as it seems. the first time is always the hardest time. get it over with the first time and you're good to go.

I'm not just airing an opinion here either because studies have consistently shown their occupation to have the highest suicide rates of all.

I thought dentists held that position?

Anyway on topic I don't see a psyciatrist, not interested in drugs so I see a psychologist instead... I have cried before, but don't that often.. My psychologist spent a fair bit of time in my early sessions, making sure I knew I shouldn't be judged and shouldn't feel bad about opening up etc... I guess he did fairly well as I have told him a lot of stuff I wouldn't have thought I could ever tell anyone...

Regarding post above, I never had that test, maybe its a US requirement?

I think it must be, because I've been to a few and never have either.
The first session was always more of a friendly get to know you sort of chat for me.

 i have never been to a psychiatrist or doctor about my probs. but i would like to. i just want to ask someone what happens the first time you go & what do they say to ya?

same here....i want to go see one but im to afraid of opening up.
i really cant imagine how i will react to that situation, lol. ill probably go in there and they will ask whats my problem and i will be like "um...i dunno...nothing really" like i usually say if someone asks whats wrong. i can just imagine how embarrassing it would be. and also...i dont want my parents to know that ive gone and seen one. hmm.

Cried when i first met my psychologist, otherwise i don't ever cry with my new one. It seems i can only cry alone, or with my mum about this sp.
