Cured!

Hey guys,

I've been battling social anxiety for the best part of 2 years now, and this week I've realised I'm at the stage where I can say I'm 'cured.' If you want to read about the techniques that I've used, please go to my blog (link below) and read the latest one entitled 'cured!' - It's all CBT based and might not be for everyone, but its made a huge impact on my life. I've hopefully given enough detail that you can try some techniques if you wish. If you want any more information, email me - [email protected]

Thanks so much for that. The post really does sound genunine and there is a lot of great information and help.

I don't believe that this is the kind of thing that ever really leaves you, hence the need for the action plan. Now I know what works, hopefully when I feel myself slipping back into bad habits and negative thinking, I can nip it in the bud before it gets too bad.

I'm not sure if I hate you or love you for it.

Hate: does it mean I should also manage it?
Love: thanks for showing the way.

Thanks so much for sharing! I've used CBT methods myself and have found them to be very effective. For the first 6 months or so, the whole "positive thinking" thing seemed rediculous. It felt fake, superficial, silly, and even ignorant. But let me tell you, after a few months of work, a switch in my head just flipped. I now think rationally instead of negatively and am so much happier. If anyone doubts CBT or thinks it's a bunch of sugar coating crap, give it a go for 6 months. I dare you.

Again, thanks for sharing your story :)

haha love me please don't loathe me!

Livingthequestions - very interesting what you say. I think most people do get turned off my the stigma of the positive thinking crap! I certainly did. I think you're right in that you have to give it a while to see the effects. I think I suffered for a long time, but I got to a point where I did just 'click' and I thought, "ENOUGH!" After that point, I didn't care how stupid it sounded, I decided I'd do absolutely anything to free myself from my chains.

I just went into town shopping - normally a high-anxiety situation with constant worries about bumping into my school kids and parents and people I know. I had a lovely meal and shopped, and did bump into a few people with absolutely no anxiety. So nice actually listening to people and thinking about others instead of living in my own crazy mind!

I completely agree. It sounds so stupid and wrong to think positive thinking can help. I think when you are stuck in a fixing rut, all your body can imagine is to use more anxiety to fix it. It does not makes sense to your body and brain that positivity is the way out. The counter. You just cannot feel afraid if you want to be there or your want something enough.

Also I think its important to also note that this is not just the realm of CBT. Many methods, cultures, religions like buddhism use similar techniques to help people.
