Control Freaks

Anyone else have any control freaks in their life? I have to deal with my controlling grandfather and controlling psycho weirdo aunt. Any suggestions on how to deal with such people? It's so hard. My anxiety makes defending myself and claiming my life as my own so painfully hard and I'm so discouraged. I have a lot of anger built up in me, too, toward them because I can't get it out so it sits inside me and rots. Now I'm really bitter.

Anyone who has the same sort of situation and/or anyone with advice, please comment. Thanks.

Yes, unfortunately I do have to deal with controlling people. For many years I used to basically do nothing so as to avoid doing something 'wrong', but I must confess it's quite amusing to see them lose their minds of trivial, well placed, obstacles ;)

If it doesn't hurt, they'll never learn, eh?

I found no way to deal with my step father at the time, even when I refused to see my family my mind would always go back and dig up the past.

Once I focused on my Avoidance and how it works and how I respond to it, I was able to improve my everyday situations.

Once I was happy with myself the only way I could finally see them was to forgive them... mind you took me 33 years to forgive them, but I still keep a distance not to get swallowed up by emotions.

I think I answered you within my ramblings!

I usually just try to avoid them, but there's some interesting advice in these articles.

Dealing With Control Freaks

Thank you! Oh my god, the second article describes my grandfather EXACTLY. HAHA. Nice. This makes me feel better about dealing with him and reassures me I have nothing to feel guilty about - I'm simply standing up for myself in the face of a control freak :)

This from the second article, especially: "Understand that they are skilled manipulators, artful and intimidating, rehearsed debaters and excellent at distorting reality."

That describes him EXACTLY.
