I'm no expert either, just someone with an opinion, but alcohol makes you 'feel good', because it TEMPORARILY takes away fear and better judgement. That's why people do things under the influence of alcohol they wouldn't do when they're sober, and if they are able of remembering it, they are shocked & amazed at themselves for doing it. If a medication had these same effects of masking or eliminating the same fears, we would be a threat to ourselves and others behind the wheel of a car, operating machinery, and imagine some of the insults we would sling at people that we would normally want to impress. This type of masked or eliminated fear would only be effective for existing in situations where everyone has the same sense of masked and eliminated fear... otherwise, we would still be unacceptable, the same as the alcohol. Sober people don't really respond to those under the influence or tolerate it for very long unless they are 'feeling good' as well.

thnx,

I guess I'm asking if there are any drugs available can provide a slight relief of SA without compromising motor skills and judgement?

for ex: Things like job interviews, non-alcohol social events, presentations.

I would like to stand in a crowd without worrying of anyones staring at the back of my head.

I'm really not aware of anything like that, there are the 'relaxers', nerve meds like Darvon, etc., but all these meds impair judgement, and if you begin to rely on things like that as a quick fix, before you know it you could be popping a few more than you should and eventually be facing an addiction problem. And of course all these types of meds advise about driving, etc. & for a very good reason. Even the meds I'm on for the SA (Paxil, Effexor XR & Trazadone) advise against driving, etc.

Maybe someone else knows of something, but outside of prayer, I don't know of a thing, I wish I did!

Best wishes!

ohhhhh Elkapath! Don't say that! I'm not about to deny that alcohol isn't a splendid escape, relief from these afflictions we've been plagued with, but the alcohol can have very damaging effects on your life as well. I used to be intoxicated practically 24/7.... I wrecked two cars, lost money (I could NOT afford to lose!) got into some situations I severely regretted and would not haver gotten into if I had been sober, and the worst thing, I had my little girl with me in one of the cars I wrecked.... thankfully, she wasn't harmed, but I COULD HAVE KILLED HER! That thought sobered me up REAL FAST. We all have low self esteem to begin with, trust me, the alcohol will make you feel even more like a loser in the long run, and give you an even lower opinion of yourself! Be careful!

The drugs you are talking about are called benzodiazepines (zanax,clonipin,valum,lorazepam...)they produce the same chemical reactions in the brain as alcohol....just in a pill form

Benzodiazepenes are the meds you seek such as Klonopin and Xanax.

Alcohol is among the best for me also, if i mix in amphetamine also i may get away the drunky feeling, but you will replace it depending how you are with aggressive, impulsive behaviour. But for me, benzo is a joke compared to alcohol, if you are lucky benzo works a couple of days(then you must lay in bed and wait because of the tolerance buildup, and in either case alcohol is better for me ) but it never lasts, alcohol isn't about tolerance in the same way in my experience. But i guess alcohol depletes you of many important vitamines, so drink much water and take vitamines, maybe that's the best for SAD overall. And for the threadstarter, for me Wellbutrin give some of the similar effects alcohol does, and that's the only pill that comes even close to alcohol in my own experience. Maybe barbiturates does the trick also, but you may need to take depot pills if you test them/ or opiods in general, and let your doctor/ drugdealer give you the best suitable sort, maybe then you have some pleasent months ahead of you.

All these things (alcohol, tranquilizers, SNRI's) work by altering brain chemistry. Brain chemicals such as serotonin, norepinephrine, epinephrine, dopamine, histamine and GABA all help us feel calm and relaxed. When they are imbalanced it can make us feel many ways - dopamine too high can make you OCD, low serotonin depression, high histamine can lead to mania, etc. Mine were all off at one point and I felt like a raging lunatic! When the serotonin and norepinephrine levels came back into normal range via amino acid therapy - the panic and anxiety was gone.

Alcohol can make you feel better temporarily but for those of us with anxiety and blood sugar issues and adrenal fatigue (very very common) - it makes the next day a living anxious hell!

I've even had a panic attack after a few drinks. Talk about interesting

I wouldn't suggest those things. They might relieve you temporary, but the main problem is still there and you would also carry with the hell of an addiction. It will make everything worse, trust me.

To solve that problem simply take your benzos on a PRN basis, that way you wont build up tolerance nor will you get addicted or dependent on them. Problem solved!
