Reconnecting with an Old Friend

My former best friend, who I haven't talked to in like 8 months, recently sent me a message on Facebook. He wanted to know what was up and he invited me to a party this Friday at his girlfriend's house. I'm kind of debating whether to go or not.....I mean, I haven't talked to him in so long, and now he wants to catch up at a party (w/ alcohol and beer)? Do you think that's a little weird? I'm nervous to go because most of the time I'm shy...especially around ppl I don't know well. And there's going to be people there I don't know. So I don't want to go and end up not talking much and not having a good time.....but at the same time, I'm thinking I do want to catch up w/ my friend and plus I feel like I should at least try to go because it's better to try then to not go at all and maybe I would've met some cool people......What do you think? When you get invited to a social gathering do you go if you have SA or are shy? Any advice on how to calm down, relax, and talk more if I go to the party?

Yea man I have been there. I just think of it as just catching up with an old buddy rahter than a party where I have to mix and mingle with others.

No, I don't think it's weird to invite you at a party to try to re-connect, not at all, and in fact, I don't think 8 months without seeing an old friend is that long. About how to survive to this actual party, well in my case what I do is, if I'm lucky someone will ask me to pick him/her up and this way I don't have to enter the place alone. If I have to go alone, I try to arrive late when everyone is so wasted that they won't notice me, but usually I'm still too nervous to enter so I sit near by and drink vodka to try to give me some guts, but I'm still too nervous, so I go for a walk, and come back, and go for a walk, and come back, and eventually I meet someone I know at the front door. hahaha... yep. That's the most pathetic advice I ever wrote.

This is extremely sound advice.
