Some of it is interesting, yes, but the typical prerequisite to work that is of any importance is a PhD; I'm not sure any of that interest would survive if I was in a bad financial situation, anyway -- it may very well turn to disappointment. I haven't kept up with news of any sort lately, so I don't think I've read any articles about the particle you mention.
Going through physics classes, but I don't plan on majoring in physics. It doesn't offer career advantages over comparably difficult majors, I think. I suppose computer science, applied math, economics, and the like are possibilities for me. A lot of thought has been put into it, but no definite answer has come out.
It wasn't without some breaks, though none of them were as long as yours.
