Interesting article about Facebook

Not really intuitive for a lot of people since only the younger generation really feels it I think.. and only then, the popular ones don't feel the negative effects of facebook.

Everything can be a source of depression.. but is it the solution to it to eliminate all depressing or difficult things? I even read teachers in England were prohibited to correct all mistakes in a child's homework if there were too many, but only a certain amount in order to not traumatise them.. I haven't seen a more stupid idea :).

I think FB is neither good or bad in itself, it's what people make of it..

my opinion on Facebook is that it's a very open place that attracts many dark, sinister characters. I've never been using it and don't ever want to.

Facebook is the best thing and the worst thing ever.
I love the fact that it helps me keep in regular touch with far-away friends when a few years ago it would've been impossible (it would've just been about writing 2 letters a year or something)
Facebook can be amusing, funny photos, interesting stories.
Facebook can be a good way to meet new people - friends of friends.
Facebook makes it easier to send somebody a quick message to show you still care.

But at the same time, Facebook can be a massive curse.
Everybody is writing to everyone else more than they write to me! Nobody is interested in my stupid status! Everybody hates me!

I'm not surprised that its causing depression in teens.
This may sound like a ridiculous comment but part of me feels like Facebook is something for which adverse addiction could be treated at some point in the future. It has the potential to rip people to shreds if they already possess a mindset of self-doubt. In the UK, its cited amongst the reasons for HALF of the divorces that take place in this country. It can be very, very destructive.

I've got very worked up in the past because I believed some people had deleted me. Or saw an Event which I wasn't invited to. Or a message I wasn't included in. Sounds so stupid and I hate it but if I got rid of my FB, I'd get rid of all the other good reasons for it.

You just have to learn how to use it and how much value to attribute to it. The less value and importance you give FB the less detrimental it can become.

But I can imagine its a nightmare for school kids. I bet they delete each other left, right and centre after petty arguments and get upset about whether or not they feature in their best-friends profile pic.

Eurgh, I'm glad I'm not a teenager with FB.

Interesting article. I don't even have a Facebook anymore because it really only made me more depressed. And this article covers pretty much why I left in the first place. Then again, Lea makes a great point too:

I think FB is neither good or bad in itself, it's what people make of it..

fear will always be a double edged sword. it pushes us forward and it holds us back, so basically it keeps us balanced. i think that fear is a sign of a misunderstanding

I have been considering getting rid of my FB page. But I have friends and family all over the place that I wouldn't get to talk to otherwise and a couple of games that I enjoy. So, I've slowly been deleting 'friends,' starting with the people that have been pissing me off the most (you know, those people that post a new status every two hours or whine about their lives 24/7). I've weeded out about 40 of those 'friends' so far and found I haven't been as annoyed with FB lately.

The 'hide from Newsfeed' feature is also incredibly invaluable. Means you don't have to read all those idiotic updates from people who are either showing off about stuff or whinging about nothingness.

I don't tend to delete as I like to keep doors open for people. But I did delete some idiot the other week who always uses his statuses to make jokes about disasters currently going on in the world. Not funny, and annoying how he thinks it is.

don't forget the ones who post every 4 hours about which bible verse they're praying over

There's a way to hide from the newsfeed???? Where the hell have I been!? How do you do that?

I've managed to scare most religious people out of my life.

Haha I know, great right? Then they NEVER come up in your feed again! But they're still on your friends list.

When you're on the home page, looking at the feed, hover your mouse on the top right hand corner of a post. An 'X' appears. Click on the X and it gives you the option to either hide just that post or "hide all posts by *annoying person*" Click the 2nd option and there you go. Your feed is free of idiots!

WOW. You are my new hero. Thank you! :D

if they were truly righteous, they would pray for you

it's always fun to be the subject of unsolicited prayers

At my old job, I had a customer who would give me a little prayer pamphlet every time she came in. I didn't want to insult her with my atheism, so I just took the pamphlet and smiled. I guess it made her feel good and it made me laugh inside, so all is good.

you can also choose to hide from "farmville" or whatever games

so you still get real posts from those people, but not the farmville etc. crap

Indeed!
I've seen some of my friends' FB's and their feeds are littered with all that rubbish, you have to click on "view older posts" about 10 times before you see anything interesting.
I couldn't care less if you lost a cow on your farm!
