Addictions and genetics

Do you think you have to have a propensity to addictive behavior to become a full blown addict to medications such as the anti-anxiety meds or pain killers? Is it a genetic thing or state of the mind or....?

I question this because both my parents were addicts. But all three of us kids are not. Personally, I am on a strong anti-anxiety medication that I could just as well sell on the street each month and make a good chunk of money. I do not. My point is, I know that when I get my medication for SA/panic attacks I take as prescribed, no more, no less. It's really simple for me. I have a full bottle of Valium in front of me yet I only take it or even half a pill, as needed.

But I keep hearing that addictions (any form) is mainly due to genetics, or similar form there of. So if both my parents were addicts (illegal drugs, alcohol, RX medicines, dad was kleptomania as well, mom had SA as well as bi-polar) how is it that me, my sister and brother all are NOT? I mean, we can not even stand the smell of alcohol or cigarette smoke, so what makes us different? Or is it just a mind-set? Willpower, because we have seen first hand what addiction can do?

I don't mean to sound obnoxious about it, I am honestly curious because it seems I've only read where it's mainly genetics, and I am just a bit confused.

I guess my reason to the post is that I want to hear what others think, views on this.

Thanks!

I thing that addiction is also due to lack of information of what is an addiction, and how hard it is to kick out,I also have anti-anxiety medication, and i thing its the best stuff ever because it calms me down like nothing else. But i am conscious that's its more addictive then heroine so I only take it very occasionally. And for a real good time I combine with some phenibut and that combo really kills SA. But drugs are not the long-term solution to our problems and that's why website like this exists.

True, that's a good way to look at it. We know that the meds are not a solution, and sites like this help us in conjunction.

regarding Phenibut, I have heard of that - I've also heard that Picamilion is another one to consider, but I have yet to find solid evidence, only hearsay.
