Being your Best

I’m working on some SA issues firstly via a CBT therapist and more recently via some threads on SPW. In many respects my progress has been nothing short of astounding…however.

I often still kind of lose it. A couple of personal examples are.

a) I can be in a shop and all is going well. I step back onto the street and I’ve lost all my coordination and my awareness is heightened totally unnecessarily.

b) I’m feeling fine, relaxed and discreet. I enter a building and all of a sudden my eyes are shooting all over the place and I’m signalling my arrival to everybody.

So I know both scenarios. I can keep it together and carry myself well or I can present almost as a victim of the environment. My question to you what sort of coping strategies do you have for your individual anxieties that will either negate your anxiety or allow you to override it and perform at your optimum i.e. normal? You are going somewhere, you know you may get anxious. How do you prepare? How do you cope?

I too feel a bit awkward in highly public places. It's like everyone around me notices my SA behaviors. Anyway I'm not sure if this is a coping skill, but being with other people I know really helps.

nfortunately none of my methods are positive. not self damaging or anything but they wouldnt do much to help in this case as theyre more....shorten the length of said event....IE my INlaws.....if i know im going for a weekend, ill deliberately leave REALLY late in the day, say like nono, its a 7 hour run one way, get in really late, oh noes! everyone has to go to bed!. then i only have to motor through saturday, and geez, guys, sunday, its a super long drive back, we have to leave REALLY early in the morning! and were gone by like 6 am on sunday :p.

I didnt say it was constructive, just helpful in being avoident lol,

Said in jest I know but that said having a sense of purpose does seem to help.
