Yep - true - the majority of the time anyway.

For me the mental preparation is nearly always tenfold worse than the event myself - with a few exceptions. But it's those few exceptions that can cause an anxiety build up for the next possible anxiety-inducing event.

Irrational but hard to stop.

Exactly, that's the definition of anxiety. The only way to remedy it is to test the waters.

Yep, true. I'm going to Morocco next year as part of my university course... for a whole year! I'm trying really hard not to freak about it, because i know that if a do my anxieties will spiral out of control and i'll imagine the worst (and often when you do this, it will end up being crap!) So sometimes it's best to just go ahead with something without overthinking it.

I've noticed this too. I try to remind myself that the real event is never as bad as the buildup to it. It helps me stop avoiding things and get through them.

I think that for me it works both ways. sometimes I am really afraid of a situation then I find out there was absolutly nothing to worry about.
other times I am not expecting anything bad and I end up having a panic attack so hard that I feel like I am about to feint ( true story).

I know what you mean, that's happened to me before. I was all ready to handle a group interview... then when we got into the small room all sitting at a big table... I started to freak out and I had to go to the bathroom. That was years ago, but it was horrible.
