No clue how to talk to babies

I'm an uncle for the first time, my sister having given birth two days after Christmas.

I love holding her although at times i am afraid of hurting her, but the main thing is the awkwardness at not knowing how to talk to a baby/child. I can't exactly talk about the weather o'r the news so what the hell am i supposed to say? Damn! I hate being socially awkward like i am...I am so jealous of people who are able to talk freely.

It's mega difficult because she can't talk back...I think it will be easier when she'll be old enough to talk then all i'll need to do is answer questions lol!

Does anyone else feel really awkward talking to children?

Awkward? Heh, at least you can get close enough to actually hold them. I can't even get close to a child without them either running away from me or crying. I swear to god children hate my face. The acne doesn't help and my tired eyes doesn't help either.

But, for me when my baby cousin comes to my house and she's willing to accept me. I usually just play with her, like move her hands around, make funny faces and stuff like that. I mean you have to realize there's other ways to communicate then with words.

Just play with kids...I feel socially awkward around them sometimes too, but I've found out that if ya just play with them, they are more than happy to do that.

Most kids just want attention; they really don't care how awkward or silly you might appear. So, just go play with the baby...tickling, blow on its belly etc...

You don't need to talk to babies, you just make funny faces/sounds and stuff to make them laugh.

I'm the same recluse. You need to be just funny and attractive while your talking to babies but I find it harder to talk to children than babies. I always make an effort to be close to them and try to talk sincerly but finally become so serious and that makes children bored I think.

I can handle babies ok, but once they're able to talk I really suck. I start talking to them as if they were adults for some reason, especially if someone's watching the interaction.

Children scare me to be honest, but weirdly enough I would love to have kids in the future (well, first I need to find a guy...that almost seems impossible)

i was an infant teacher for 1 1/2 yrs. let me tell ya, talking to babies is soooo much easier than talking to adults!!! or even other kids! it's like my therapist pointed out to me when we were talking about how i miss being w/ babies... "babies can't talk back and babies can't judge you". see, i can just ramble to death when i'm w/ a baby. you can complain about your day, say what's on your mind, anything as long as it's in a baby-appropriate tone of voice and no swearing!! i know they don't know what you're saying, but i could never swear around a baby! anyways, it might look weird if you're around other people, but if you're alone w/ her, feel free to say what's going on in your head... how awkward you're feeling, you don't think you know what you're doing, etc. pretty soon, you'll feel more comfortable around her
