Duration of intrusive thoughts

So I'm curious, what is the usual length of the intrusive thoughts you get?

Mine are usually just for a moment, like briefly telling myself "jerk the wheel, drive the car off the road!"

Is the norm just brief moments like that or do you have them for extended periods of time?

Well a thought is a thought. It is quick and the way you respond to the thought determines how you will feel about it. I don't think a thought can be long, but you can dwell on a single thought for hours if you're really obsessive.

erm.. intrusive thoughts for me.. can be a few seconds.. or minutes.. or hours.. or weeks.. And they come and go in waves.. It won't be constant thought... But come in regular intervals.. Or if anything provokes the thought..

mine last for short periods of time. Anywhere from a few seconds to a couple minutes.

I had trouble with this when I was younger. One time my brother asked me "why did you just run up to the TV and put your foot on it?" I said because if I didn't I would get my toe stuck in the drain next time I took a bath.

The only way it got better was when I learned to say "enough, no." I still get crazy thoughts but I try my best to push them aside. You just have to work at it.

sometimes they are short, just a quick thought, other times they persist in my head, like (hey kill him!) and i then i will look away and then (hey she's old, Easier to kill) and it keeps happening everywhere i look for a few minutes, or even an hour, usually it's about the whole duration of a bus ride.
