i decided tha i would go to my doctor for my SA. i would say my SA is 5/10 in severity. i can go and hang out with my friends, but it's when i go to my classes my SA skyrockets. any good recommendations on what i should ask from my doctor? and, do they usually start working right away or i have to take them for at least a week to see any results? btw, is hair loss or weight gain a side-effect?

Um, well I wasn't actually sure if they made them myself. It was something I was considering asking my doctor about but I don't like meds, crippling fear of taking them BUT I could find some stuff out for you if you'd like :)

Is there even such medicine for social anxiety? I mean don't they just tell you to go to a therapist?

That's what I would think? I know there's medication for everything else under the sun though. I mean if anything they'd might prescribe you something for depression and/or anxiety. SA is kinda sorta combined of a lot of things? So you can't really just treat it but more the sub symptoms of it.

They don't make any meds specifically for social anxiety, at least I've never heard of any. People are usually put on something like Klonopin (generic clonazepam), Zoloft, or something else. Your doctor, if he's a regular doctor, & not a psychiatrist, will probably tell you you need to see a psychiatrist for that kind of medication. In a lot of places, regular doctors aren't allowed to prescribe medications for mental health & some doctors just choose not to. Plus, you may just be told to see a therapist or psychologist because that may be all you need. You may not even need medication.

Or you can get high like most American teenagers do :\ I've heard it really mellows the soul out.

Apparently you cant speak of medication on this forum or else youll get an infraction, even if you simply say what you are taking.

so, if i go to a doctor and tell him about my anxiety issues, he won't prescribe me meds that will help me be less anxious?

edit: what im trying to say is, my doctor can prescribe me anti anxiety meds that will help me relax in situations i would be anxious right? i didnt mean meds specifically for social anxiety really but it's in social situations where i have the anxiety. i have befriended someone here and he told me that it works but i wanted other people's responses as not everyone responds well to the same meds

It could take a while for your doctor & you to find the right med. Just like you said, different people respond different ways to the same meds, so if your doctor puts you on a med, if after a month or two it still isn't working at all, you may have to try another one. It could take several tries to find the right med to work for you. There are numerous meds that help anxiety, so you might not find the right med for you right away.

Most doctors will first try an SSRI antidepressant.
For some people, this wont work. But for others, like me, it has the potential to kick anxiety down to a completely manageable level. My life has literally changed since I started taking meds for social phobia.

Here is how I got on pills for SA:

I went the regular doctor that you would see if you were sick and my mom came in with me and told the doctor. I was aboot 20 at the time so it was really embarrassing but im glad I got on pills.

I was put on the SSRI Paxil. You will most certainly get put on an SSRI and maybe a benzo like Klonopin or Xanax if you get panic attacks too.

SSRI's work for some people and you cannot predict how an individual will respond to a specific SSRI. Its simply trial and error.

I have tried every SSRI, Wellbutrin, Seroquel, Benzos (Klonopin, Ativan, Xanax), Effexor, and Remeron.

I would say the best of these for me is Xanax but it is also most addictive and dangerous. The danger is worth it for me cause it really helps anxiety.

If you ever consider getting on a benzo then make sure you know the dangers of dependence and tolerance beforehand.

That's not an easy question to answer. I've only been on one anti-anxiety med & that's Klonopin/clonazepam, & they all work differently for all people. "Relaxed" isn't the right word, but I find myself slightly less scared of things I'm usually scared of when I take Klonopin. Plus, during panic attacks, it calms me down. I'm on a super low dosage (0.5mg, the lowest possible) & have a 9-10 out of 10 severity, so it doesn't really do much good for me. But, since you say your anxiety level is about a 5 out of 10, a med like this would be much more effective for you.
