Haha, yeah, if you can speak spanish, most likely you won’t have any trouble understanding portuguese. A good number of words are different, and it certanly sounds different, but knowing one of the languages enables you to understand the other without much trouble.

I do have problems understanding spoken portuguese. Once I worked with some brazilian girls and couldn't understand a word when they were chatting.
In reading it's somewhat better. Same goes for french, for example.
