When is it the right time to leave?

I too split early when I feel like I'm not adding anything to a party. I also tend to stick to the few individuals I know at a party and the uneasy feeling of being a tagalong creeps up. I usually end up leaving once that sensation hits me and consider the night good for even going out.

I have this problem where if I am going to a friend's place I have no idea when it is appropriate to leave. There has been more than several times this year where I was invited to go to a friend's house/family occasions and reluctantly went. While there, I would end up feeling really uncomfortable and leaving an hour after arriving (sometimes with out even an explanation (Ex. "I have to go, bye" and then walking out the door all with in 30secs). Its not like I had a reason to leave. I had no where I had to go.

Would this seem weird to them and is it appropriate to just leave like this?
And have you had a similar experience?

I think if I could go back I would have just avoided these events completely. ::eek::

I dunno if this is good or not, because some may classify it as "avoidant" behavior which is counterproductive to us getting better, but maybe you could set your cell phone alarm to go off at a certain time (like say an hour and a half after you arrive at your friend's house) and then when it goes off, just pretend you got a text from someone. Look at it and then say "Oh shit, I have to go" or something.

Then you have a reason, ya know? It might help ease the awkwardness of leaving.

Or you could just say something like, "Well I better get back home I have to... (insert reason here)"

I find it's much better to be direct and announce you are leaving, than just to say "Well I'm going, see ya, bye." I think that may make someone wonder why you're leaving. At least if you tell them what you're going home to do, they won't wonder why.
