tips on applying for jobs

So I'm a college student and I don't work during the semester, but I want to get a job when I go home. I've had 2 jobs in the past, but my mom really assisted me in getting them (forced me to go, talk to managers, call to check the application status, etc.). Now I want to do it on my own, and I really want to get a job that pushes me out of my comfort zone (waiter, bank teller, working with children, etc.), but I'm struggling with a couple things.
I keep getting really anxious about using the phone to actually call these places to see if they're hiring. I have a little paragraph written down that I'll have in front of me, but I keep feeling nervous about calling and asking for the manager--my brain is saying "Don't do it, they're busy and don't have time to talk to you, they'll yell at you or think you're stupid, you have no right to their time," which is untrue and unrealistic, but it's where my head goes.
I also keep envisioning these scenarios where I actually get the job and then I fail utterly--like as a waiter I'll forget everyone's orders or just be very slow and the manager and other waiters will get angry at me because the restaurant will be really busy and I'll get fired, or as a bank teller I won't know answers to customer's questions because I don't know a lot about banking and I'll have to constantly ask for the manager's or other people's help and I'll hold up lines and generate really uncomfortable social situations.
So does anybody have any similar experiences in which they were successful, unsuccessful, anybody who's in the same situation, any tips? Thanks!!!

Don't worry about your job performance, everywhere will give you pretty good training on the job. Most waiters write down the order instead of remembering it (some do that just to show off to try and get tips) and working as a cashier in a bank, you don't have to know much about banking at all.

As for calling the manager, I can't help you with that. I'm terrible on the phone too ;s

I always had trouble with phones until I realize that I could hand up at any time and if I need to I could come up with an excuse as to why I did (like the phone running out of battery).

maybe you should try visualize yourself being successful in those working circumstances rather than keep thinking you'll fail. when you believed that you could do it, you have a greater chance of doing what you have in mind in reality. it keeps getting better when you practice thinking you would succeed.
