Therapy?

Had my second meeting with a therapist today. And I was just wondering how many people in here are actually getting help for their SA?

*keeps hand down*

I probably should, but I could never admit to anyone (face to face) that I am socially phobic, plus I'm too scared to try going to a therapist in the first place.

I am in therapy - i have had a break from it though for the last couple of weeks. My therapist is on holidays. I am to start group therapy in mid January. I am actually looking forward to it.

yeah i went to a counsellor at uni but it was only talking and every time i'd leave crying  cos i'm such an emotional person. but i don't think it did any good for me really. but after a disasterous second semester at uni it has finally pushed me to see a psychologist who specialises in social phobia/social anxiety. so in february i'll be doing an 8 week group therapy program, so hopefully after then i will be the person i really want to be! i'm scared shit but i know i have to do this otherwise i'll end up being a loner all my life.

I went, once, to see one, I don't know for all of you, but here a psychologist can't diagnose something nor than treat it. All she could say to me is, as you tell me, you are (probably) SA, but you have to go see a doctor to have a diagnostic.. And by the way, all this is probably your mother's fault... this is the worst thing to say to me.. anyway.. never saw anybody about it again...

you shouldn't have to take time off from work to see a therapist. Sessions usually last only an hour tops. Well unless you work 24/7 that is. The main concern would be if you had insurance to cover such an appointment.

But back on topic. Therapy can be beneficial. depending on the person's willingness to want therapy. Otherwise you're wasting his/her and your time and money.

She's obviously from the Freud school of thought - and he had it all wrong. That sucks Aerandir - sorry to hear that.

that's true in the states also. A psycologist only listens to your problems. A psychiatrist prescribes meds for you. And what she ment was that you probably got it from your mother. That it's a more dominant trait to receive from a mother than a father.

tryin to recover from an ilness as terrible as social phobia is more important than anything else whether it be work, family etc., don't you's think? even though it'll cost me $110 per session, i think it's worth the struggle cos in the end i know i'll be so much better off.

what about nlp

have any of you looked into finding a therapist
with an NLP background?

if not, for those looking for one psy, remember to try
and find one with an nlp background.

It's not perfect but these therapist aint messing around
with long past events and wont blame your mother.

They can get much better results than traditional therapist
in most cases. At least youll get as good results in 1/4th the time.

let me know about your results if you go that route.

p.s. my short report on what helped me most get rid of most
of my SA is almost done. I ll let you guys know about it when its done.
Writing is hard tho! ; )
