The Military

So I'm joining the Army...
Don't know where I'll be posted, don't know what I want to do - whether it be logistics/planning, truck driving or the military police.
Three weeks til final interviews, so I should have made a decision by then.
I figure I'll have SP and the potential for depression in any job, I might as well go all out and do what I want.
Anyone else had any experience in the Defence Force? What was it like?

No, but I work with a lot of ex-Navy, ex-Airforce and ex-Army people. They have served their time in the forces and have utilised their training to cross over into jobs such as radio operator, medic, marine operations etc on drilling rigs and gas or oil production platforms. The companies that operate these facilities seem to prefer to employ ex military personnel if they are looking for candidates to fill new positions.
It seems like it is a career path than can open a lot of doors in civilian life as well if you make smart choices and explore your options early on. Good luck!.

i served six years active duty in the United States Marine Corps.

my job was "Intelligence Specialist" - which meant i spent a lot of time looking at maps and making coffee when i wasn't cleaning and polishing floors.

i went in as a sheltered 18 year old kid, fresh out of high school. i got out as a worldly 24 year old leader of men and women.

and that has enabled me to remain gainfully employed for the last 25 years.

good luck!

Don't be a truck driver. The other options are okay. I don't know how AUS forces deploy to the middle east, if at all. Truck driving is a deadly job. Trucks and their drivers are IED magnets, at least that was my observation. I was in an infantry unit. Pick something that will be available once you get out.

Wow I think it'd be good for me then :)
thanks for the replies everyone. :s about trucks being magnets, makes sense though. Talked to a couple of people I know since and I think MP is the way to go - logistics planning is too much of a desk job
Glad there's been a lot of positive experiences in the military, sounds character building :)
