SSRI's: what's the final outcome?

So I recently started taking Citalopram for depression/anxiety, and I was just wondering... Once I'm done taking them, do its effects stay with me for life? Or do they only work while I'm on them. I don't understand going on medication for depression and then stopping after you're not depressed anymore. Won't you just become depressed again after you stop?

I've never had medications or therapy for my SA, but maybe taking medications while getting therapy could help. I feel that I would just become depressed again after I stop taking the drugs. I have an addictive personality, so what I would do is notice that the medicine is helping my depression/anxiety. After taking it for a while, I would become addicted and I would need it more and more, then later giving me bad side effects if I did stop taking.

I've had a lot of addictions over the years: weed, WoW, internet, AIM, webcam chats, etc etc
