Shy charters in literature

sonya in crime and punishment is shy. in the novel, she was forced into prostitution, which made her even more shy.
the invisible man is a book with a no name character that is not shy, but he's really alienated. he's one of my favorite characters. he starts off ambitious, but ends up living in an abandoned room at the bottom of an appartment complex. because he never reached any kind of enlightenment, he wired 1,000 of lightbulbs in his cave so he could at least steal light from the building out of spite.
im trying to think of more, do you know any?
