I think it really depends on your school/major. I am going to be a Junior at Drexel (in Philadelphia), and I've only had to do one presentation so far. It was for a Business class, in my Freshman year. It was a group situation, not individual.

I haven't had any presentations yet because I just started this week but in my business class I'm going to have to present in front of the class 5 times 8O . Then in another one of my classes I'm going to have a group presentation and an individual speech and ditto that for English.

I think, more often than not, you do have to do at least a few of them. The school I was going to was obsessed with presentations and made them requirements in many of the classes. One of my teachers wanted an hour-long presentation from pairs of students. Actually, now that I really think of it, pretty much all of my classes except one wanted presentations. Even Math for some reason. Ugh.

Yes. I had to take a Public Speaking class(pretty much required everywhere) where I had to give 5 speeches. I have had to give presentations in about 5 other classes and I still have 2 years left for a bachelors. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be and actually I kind of started to like it towards the end and talked too long. I was fearing it a great deal before I did it. I was doped up on tranquilizers a little more than usual, but I got through it. There are other things that give me more anxiety than giving presentations for some reason. Ask your doctor for some tranquilizers like Xanax or Klonopin just for those ocassions. Also, just try not to think about dreading it. Do some relaxation exercises and while relaxed, visualize yourself doing well. A fear of Public Speaking is very common, even in people without Social Anxiety Disorder.

I think it depends on the school. I went to a school with about 10,000 - 12,000 students. Some of the classes were lecture classes with many kids in them. In those classes, you won't have presentations. But, in the class with 40 and under, there is a good chance that there will be at least one presentation but they were actually not bad. And if it's a small class, you become comfortable enough with the students to do okay in them. And plus, those presentations don't count for too much. And most of the time it's with other people, so you actually don't do too much talking.

The most terrible thing was that public speaking was a required course at my college. Had I known that before I applied to the school, I'd definitely would not have went there. A public speaking course is the worst- because it's not just one lchunk of the class grade. It's the whole course. It didn't help me at all with my SA/shyness, in fact it made it worse. I did a million times better on the presentations in my classes that were not Public Speaking. It was so tense and I'd never recommend taking a PS class. I nearly failed because I had a panic attack and missed one of the presentations and got a 0.

I had to take a communications class freshmen year, and like others, I had to do 5 presentations, it helped a little that the class wasn't that big and it was pretty casual. None sophomore year. Then pretty much group presentations from then on. Maybe 5 or 6 more. I majored in biology if that helps any.

I only ever had 2 presentations.

One was a solo presentations worth 40% of my grade and I stammered through it. It didn't help that I did it on zero sleep high on caffeine.

The other was a small presentation in a HUGE lecture hall and my TA (who was this cool hippy-chick with anxiety issues too) wrote a note in my book while she was giving out presentation dates that said, "Talk to me after class" and then she said that she wouldn't make me do one if I wasn't comfortable with it. She was like, "I understand anxiety issues... its fine with me... we can work around it."

Because she was so understanding I was able to actually give a pretty decent presentation. And since then actually, I can give a really good presentation... there is something to be said about the power of understanding and willingness to help. It can really affect a person in a positive way.

Yes, but most colleges/universities require a "Public Speaking" class nowadays. There's no way around not speaking in those, I wouldn't think. There usually is some support for people with disabilities though. I don't know how that works though. You maybe able to claim social anxiety as a disability and get out of having to give presentations/speeches and do something else instead. I know my college has some disability counselor that deals with that. I don't know how it works. I don't try to consider myself disabled though. You will never get over your fears unless you face them. Trust me.... I would at least give it a try. You may want to join some Speech club or something to face your fears and with the help of some drugs and/or psychotherapy techniques, you maybe able to desensitize yourself of your fears. You may never get over them totally, but you can make them more manageable. Your fear of public speaking and social situations get stronger from avoidance.

Actually I have this math test anxiety thing. I usually get all A's, but I get anxiety attacks during math exams. I have a record of doing this and I have told my instructors about this and they have observed my performance on exams(and body languange and tension) and outside exams and they know I know the material from homework and class participation, so I got through Calculus 1 with a B, because my instructor saw that I knew the material, but I couldn't think straight and couldn't think fast during exams. I actually did well on the first 3 out of 5 exams, even with test anxiety, but I didn't come close to even finishing the last 2, but my instructor knew it was because of anxiety, so he gave me a B. I would have easily got an A if I didn't have the anxiety. I knew the material well. Actually I overheard another student saying he had a problem with test anxiety and he dropped. It's pretty common on math tests(and Public Speaking - Public Speaking is the most common phobia). Now I have Calc 2 coming up to worry about and hope I get a sympathetic instructor there, because it is significantly harder than Calc 1.

I've been practicing relaxation and imagery densitization and hope it helps.
