Outbox

What is the purpose of the "outbox" for private messages?

I have a pm that has been sitting there a few days, and I'm curious to know whether or not that means the pm was not sent. I sent myself a pm a few months ago to see how the system worked, and that message is not in my outbox, but instead my "sentbox". I assume that the two have different purposes, what is the difference?

The outbox is for messages you've sent, but the other person hasn't seen yet. The sentbox is where the message goes after the other person clicks to view it. If the message stays in the outbox forever, that means the person either isn't coming to the website anymore or just ignores all the prompts to view their new message.
