Cannot make contact over the phone. That is true, Queen's English.
Could make contact using bullets, fists, by vehicle, or sex.
A letter is strictly not making contact.
Electronic circuit with switches, voltage, transistors, diodes, resistors and capacitors - used by the phone network, and broadband, is used.
Holding a piece of plastic against your ear is not making contact with the person, and neither is a mouse, keyboard, or a touchscreen, but could suffice, but why call it that!
A light may not 'work together' until making contact with the switch.
Handshake is OK. Shouting, when in the same place?

Indeed many forms of "contact" are poor substitutes for the real thing. However a non-physical, distant communication can ensue emotion and physiological response.
