Living with Housemates?

Hi,

I'm wondering... Have any of you lived with housemates, like in an appartment or something? ^^, I just want to know what it is like, if you have SA, how do you deal with this? and did you have to eat apart or eat together? Did you make contact with the housemates? Did you have a good time? Is it nice to live this way? What do you like about it, and what are the ''NOTS?'' (dislikes)

I'm going to live with housemates near upon, so I would like to hear some experiences ^_^

Oh, and what did you buy for your room? I mean, what should I buy to live on my own? ^_^ I'm thinking of some furniture, like a couch, or some tables.
And ofc important things you need.

Please inform me :D

My experience with roommates, as we call them here, have greatly depended on how they were. Either way though, they were never particularly negative.

The best roommate I had was the first year I had roommates, freshman year in college. We got along great because he was a lot like me but older. The other roommates in the same dormitory were nice, but they were real party guys. I never really communicated with them but we were good to each other.

The next year with roommates was interesting. It was during this time I was during my greatest state of depression since I had just gone through some things. And even though some of my roommates were really cool and they really tried to connect with me, I shut them out. As a result, our interactions were awkward, but they were never negative.

This year I have roommates that are effectively shut-ins like me. We never really talk and I have literally no relationship with them, though we run a tidy ship in terms of garbage and whatnot somehow.

So I guess the main message from above is just that it depends on your roommates. Also, from what I've heard, male roommates are more chill so my experiences may not be indicative of yours. Regardless, here are some things you should do and not do:

DO:

Have at least a quick discussion about what you guys are going to do in terms of taking out and replacing the trash and cleaning things

At least occasionally agree to what they want to do in situations, cooperation is important

Be considerate to what they're doing, for example if you know they are sleeping or studying don't blare your music crazy loud and just use headphones

Always lock both your own door and the apartment door, It's not that you don't completely trust your roommates (though you shouldn't!), but their friends that come in are strangers to you

DON'T:

Be a pushover, some roommates will take advantage of this

Turn down every invitation to go places, it becomes easy for them to think that you just don't like them, which may lead to a lingering hostility

So... that's all I got for now. I may edit this later and put more do's and don'ts ^_^

As for your other questions:
What you need to buy depends if your apartment is already furnished and what utilities are covered. For myself, since my dormitory was furnished, I only needed to buy things for my bed, TV, an iron for my clothes, and a lot of food. You can look online for common things people buy for dorms/apartments.
