Sorry if anyone’s ever posted this topic before, but....

Has anyone been on Klonopin (generic Clonazepam) before?

My doctor just put me on it (I pick it up Monday) & I was wondering about other people’s experiences with it (if you’ve had any at all). Good or bad. I know meds work different in each person, but I’m still curious. It’ll be the first med I’ve ever been given for my SA/phobia, & I’m hoping it’ll help.. at least a bit.

I've never taken Klonopin, but I have taken Xanax and Valium, both of which are in the same class of meds as it. The primary difference between them is the relationship between potency and time, with Xanax being very potent, but only for just about two hours, Valium being quite mild but lasting much longer. Klonopin is somewhere in the middle.

Xanax was astonishingly effective at reducing my acute anxiety. I still felt awkward and not entirely comfortable, but I lacked the feelings of dread and urgency that so often preoccupied me, and never experienced a panic attack after taking one. Valium less so, but just enough that a long day of mildly anxiety-provoking events wasn't exhausting as it was normally. With both, there was and additional placebo effect of knowing that I had taken something that was going to help. I had less anxiety about anxiety, if you know what I mean.

Your prescription most likely has "prn" written on it, which is Latin shorthand for "as needed". I would put emphasis on "need". It can be very tempting to just take one whenever you want, but I would strongly suggest trying to save them for times when you're going to do something you ordinarily have a hard time doing, or when you're about to try to do something you've been avoiding. No drug will help your social anxiety if all you do after taking one is sit around your house. I wasted quite a few this way.

Take one while you're at home just to see what it's like and make sure it doesn't make you feel too sleepy or anything, though. The pills are probably perforated in the middle to make it easy to take half of one if it does. This is also useful in that it allows you to step down as you become more comfortable in newer situations. Say you take one to do whatever hard thing you need to do, and then the next time you have to do it (or whenever you're ready), you just take half of one, then the next time, you don't take one at all.
