in the hospital for the mental patients who did this they provided buckets of ice. the mental patients would shove their fists in the buckets of ice to create pain. that was their substitute for cutting themselves. maybe you should try that instead.
If by mental patients you are referring to people with developmental disabilities, then the right course of action is not the same as for those without them. Since people with developmental disabilities often are unable to communicate effectively, one way that they try to communicate is through self-injury...at least that is one of the theories.
That being said, I still don't think that finding a substitute for the pain is the right solution. In the end the underlying issues that cause you to cut or hurt yourself in any way are the problem, not the act itself. Finding a "less harmful" way to hurt yourself won't address anything, it will only make it seem more ok to do it since you aren't "hurting" yourself. Probably the easiest way to do that would be to get therapy, although that is certainly far from easy. All this is easy for me to say, but I have been cutting for 2 years, and have still not taken the first step to get help...hopefully I will be ready for it soon though.
